Bionix Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 Well I just got an ingenious idea for a website. The problem is, I have never made a website by myself. However, I'm a photoshop wizard and I've used GoLive and Dreamweaver to make pages for friends (a couple years ago). I need some help getting started. I feel overwhelmed. I checked the domain name I want and it's free. What should I do next? Are there pre made site layouts somewhere in the vastness of the web? Where should I go to get the site hosted? How do I get companies to pay for advertisement once I get traffic? I'm going to be using this thread until I finish the site. So if you don't have any advice for me, the least ya can do is wish me luck! thanks
NCC10281982B Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 yeah, 1and1 has photo gallery's that come with its plans and a site builder thingy. What I did was sign up for a hosting account. Then you register the domain U want in the control panel.
Bionix Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 (edited) So basicly all I have right now is an idea. Should I sign up for 1and1 right now? What should I get sorted out before I start buying stuff. I don't have a very large budget. edit: what about godaddy.com? I'm lookin for a 2nd opinion on what the best hoster is edit again: with 1and1 hosting... am I limited to their templates? I see that they charge 9.99 a month for an "eshop"... but what if I just design my own? Edited October 24, 2005 by Bionix

Phil Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 (edited) I've used 1&1 web hosting, and it's a good choice. Hosting starts at $5/month. Any web host that is less than 5/month usually has a catch that will bite you in the butt. Free web hosts like GoDaddy can be OK, but you have to live with their ad banners or footers, and they may not support some of the things you want to do with your site. It's best to get a host, then buy your domain through it, transferring your domain can be a pain. I also have a site on ix webhosting, and have no complaints, and they register your domain free. edit: There is probably no "best" web host, there are a number of good ones, but also some really awful ones, so be careful. Bionix Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 thanks phil and asus. Another question: how do I generate traffic?
Phil Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 Another question: how do I generate traffic? Give people something they want. Good content is everything. You also want to make sure that you make full use of your <title> and <meta> tags, and <alt> tags to rank well with the search engines so people will find your site. Using your keywords in your text helps too.
rh535 Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 (edited) i use Powweb.com and it is great. They have good support. And they also have forums and chat to ask questions about your site. Edited October 24, 2005 by rh535
Bionix Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 I don't know what "<meta> tags, and <alt> tags" are. Tommorow I'm going to buy some space on 1and1. I'm sure I'll continue posting when I have trouble along the way.
