Terdar Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 (edited) I am setting an HTTP server useing Linux. But i also use it for a second computer (in rare ocasions) so i partitioned 8g of the 80g HD for XP. And have downloaded the 3 disk of Linux and burned them to CDs. But when i try and install Linux it never stops at the install, it just goes strait to XP. I have it set to Boot from CD in the BIOS. JeepGC96ZJ Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 sounds like the disk is not bootable. Or did not creat a bootable sector on the disk you copied. Try booting up to a Win 98 Boot up disk and type the commands at the prompt. Jeep
Terdar Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 how would i creat a boot sector on a CD i made? I dont have a win 98 start up disk
JeepGC96ZJ Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 You have to have Norton Ghost or Norton Utilities, I am sure there are other progies that do this. But it will have an option uner Norton to make a boot disk. and you go through the steps to create a bootable CD. You will need a win 98 Boot disk to do this because it pulls the files from the Floppy disk and then adds some files to to it to make it a bootable cd. Then you can burn that to a cd and boot from it. Basically its easier to get a Win 98 Boot disk from one of your friends and then boot up into DOS and access whats on the Cd from there and run the executable to install server. d3bruts1d Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 What distro is it? If you downloaded SuSE, you can't install from CD, much less boot from it. RedHat and Mandrake CD1s are both bootable. - The other 100 distros, I have no idea about.
Terdar Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 Its RedHat 8.0, and its not bootable (well thats what i got from the website) I dont have accses to a computer in Win98 or a computer with Nortan
cptkook Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 you probably d/l'd an iso so are you sure you burned the image to the cd and not just the .iso file? That has to be done otherwise it won't boot. Also from what I remember reading when setting up my linux box you need to install linux first, then windows for dual boot to work correctly. This might be incorrect with XP, I'm not too familiar with it, but from what I understood it was best to install linux first. khel Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 I'm not too familiar with it, but from what I understood it was best to install linux first. Hmm.... small correction :-) Always Windows first, and then Linux. Have fun.
ukmike02 Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 WIN first the LINUX as linux picks up the win partitions and adds them to the boot loader, win does not do the same for linux so win first. Did you set your machine to boot from the CD drive rather than the disk? Does it attempt to read the CD-drive? Does it say bootable Cd not found on boot? Please answer these questions and I will see what I can do, what distro are you using? I used to be in the top ten mandrake experts last Sept->Nov then I was too busy and am not supporting it anymore, but thankfully I still have my knowledge Please give as much info as possible inc how you created the CDs
localguru Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 yeah I downloaded redhat 8 recently ran into the same thing, the iso's arn't boootable, but if you go to the faq on red hat eight, they have floppy images, theat you rite, and boot on a disk. read about them in the faq here http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/R...2-STEPS-ALTBOOT
d3bruts1d Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 Burn ISO 1 to CD, and it most definatly is bootable.
