exeter_acres Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 Ok...my mind is wandering. (if you see it send it back ) One of the key elements of heat sink cooling is the surface area (among many others) I am sure there is an obvious answer, but why couldn't I attach a couple good fans together if there is room in the case.. either stacking one on top of the other or attaching two next to each other???? Ok., OK/... time to point out the obvious to me,.,,, Curtis
DimensioN Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 well if you would stock them up, the second HSF wich is attatched up the first HSF fan, wouldn't have anny use.. because the heat doesn't goes true the fan you know. and all HSF without anny fans or only at the top one wouldn't help to, because the grills woulds match, so they won't give there heat of. the only thing wich does work if place a fan up the heatsink. and on everyside(2-4) that does a really great job greetz
sVperbeast2k5 Posted February 17, 2003 Posted February 17, 2003 The point of having the fans is to blow as much heat away from the metal fins of the heatsink as possible... so you could put, say, 10 fans around the heatsink if you wanted to... the problem, other than running out of room is that the fans will only cool the heatsink to room temperature. (the temp of the air inside the case) There is also a limit where the heat that the metal of the heatsink can transfer becomes less than amount being blown off of it by the heatsink... at that point the heatsink will be working as hard as it phyically can, but the cooling isn't improving any (although at that point you would have a pretty well cooled processor ) Hope this helps a lil... need sleep... sVperbeast2k5 Posted February 17, 2003 Posted February 17, 2003 logic? hmmm If logic means "wow, this sounds cool... lets try it / crap, it didn't work" , then yeah Trial and error is more fun than logic
exeter_acres Posted February 17, 2003 Posted February 17, 2003 Trial and error is more fun than logic I agree!! as long as the parts are replaceable!!!! Now where can I find 9 heatsinks and my soldering iron!! Curtis
sVperbeast2k5 Posted February 18, 2003 Posted February 18, 2003 lol how about 9 fans instead...? they're starting to pile up around here ::random thought:: I wonder what would happen if you put 9 fans together in series... *sets off to hunt for fan screws*
cahartley Posted February 18, 2003 Posted February 18, 2003 If you put 9 12v fans using .55 amps each in series you need to start out with at LEAST 108 Volts+ (to account for actual operating losses) and about 5 amps of current. THEN watch the smoke roll!!!!! Craig
bishop245 Posted February 18, 2003 Posted February 18, 2003 would that be what they call a smoke test lol
DimensioN Posted February 18, 2003 Posted February 18, 2003 (edited) lolz why dont you make your own HSF? just a copper block, with the basis of an other cooler and lots f fans greetz Edited February 19, 2003 by DimensioN
sVperbeast2k5 Posted February 19, 2003 Posted February 19, 2003 If you put 9 12v fans using .55 amps each in series you need to start out with at LEAST 108 Volts+ (to account for actual operating losses) and about 5 amps of current. Oh, my bad... I meant "put together in series" as in having the air flows of the fans sequentially connected... like having the output of one blow into the input of the next... that way each fan would use the normal 12V at .5 amps 108 Volts?? *looks at wall socket* nah... not really anything to gain from series wiring them each fan probably couldn't take the 5 amps anyway... otherwise...
