New Build, Need Help With Raid

Recommended Posts

Howdy gang!

I am building a new system, it will be an Intel 2.8 or 3.06, I am having problems deciding what Motherboard to buy. Here is a short list of what i have already, Lian Li case, WD 120g HD and Sony DRU500a DVD burner,,...this is all that will be used in this new build. In order to give you some insite I am into ripping and burning DVD's and play alot of games online. Ok, here come the questions.........

1. Should I buy 2 WD800jd's and RAID or just 1 drive and not set the RAID up.....I dont want to sacrifice stability for performance.

2. Motherboard? even if I dont do RAID I would like a raid board I think because I would need no controller card, I like my dvdrom and dvd burner on the primary and secondary.

3. RAM? I was thinking 2 sticks of 512 of a good quality ram.

Please feel free to make any suggestions that you feel would make this a good system and explain why.

Thank you for taking time to help me out!

Raid is only got redundncy really, if your afraid of one har ddrive dying then set it up, but in most case raid is not needed. I have a abit kr7a-raid. it has raid built in but I dont use. and it's a great board. with the two raind controlers, and two ide controllers, this board will hold up to 8 drives. and yeah with dvd burning you'll prolly needs lots of ram, this board will also hold 2 gigs of ram. so this has started to sound like a commercial for abit hasn't it haha

Raid 0 (Striping) does more than just add some extra EIDE ports, having two synchronous reads and writes significantly increases seek time, thus making your system faster. I would suggest the HighPoint Rocket 133 controller, you can pick it up for under $80 and it outperforms the Promise controller. Get Raid, you wont be sorry.

raid 0 will definately help, if anything in gaming it will cut into your load time,

you can get the abit a7 max 2 version 2.0, it will have everything you need, or you can get a new mobo with the granite bay chipset,

so for ram, corsair makes good stuff, maybee pc3200 low latency, are you overclocking? and if you get teh granit bay mobo you can get the dual channel ddr too.
