markiemrboo Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Following on from "Dots........................" here (it's not just dots anymore....). Well, last night I went to try and go to sleep. Turned monitor off, got in bed. As usual I couldn't so after about an hour I got up again, turned the monitor and much to my suprise the Windows desktop was corrupt and my monitor was turning on and off over and over. Did I crap my pants? OOooh god yes! So at this point I kinda got desperate and flashed back to the original stock BIOS (no increased VGPU and locked pipes). Restarted and the BIOS screen and everything was now totally unreadable. Not just dots any more! I got a bit fed up here (thinking I shouldn't have woke up, I sneezed and bit my tongue lol.. ow!!!) and just took the card out, dragged up an old Radeon 7000 AGP card (oh noes!!!!!!1111`) and stuck that in so I could atleast use my computer Not that I did, because I spent the night cleaning up paste and putting the stock heatsink/fan back on. So yeah, did all that and messed about for a bit and went to sleep. So now it's ... today! I decided I would give it one last try and put it in................... working fine. Eh!???!!? WTF????????? Ran 3dmark03 and it looked fine. Just now put the arctic cooler back on because I hate that stock heatsink if you compare them both and it... is..... fine..... still..... managed 3dmark03 and 3dmark05 and looked ok. One thing I did see was that on some of the little capacitors around the core and a couple of memory chips some Ceramique had gotten on to them. Probably from the "overspill" of Ceramique (not really a spill, I put an amazingly thin layer on the heatsink) on the heatsink or something. I dunno if that was it though because, well, it's not conductive is it? Maybe it is just because of the heat getting to them or something... Meh, I dunno! Sooo, place your bets! Reckon it's gonna die again tonight or not? I think I might restart every hour or two just to see if I start getting any funny dots at POST time again..... savethedodobird Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Your card suffers from remisive leperosy. Who know when it will come back and possibly spread to other computers. My 9500 pro did something similar to that multiple times and would then work for a while. One time it did the complete artifacting thing and completely died. So I bought a new card. My roomate tried out my old card and it worked perfectly untill it sudenly died after about a year of abuse and overclocking. So It could be a perfectly working card or it could die in 20 minutes. I would sugest if it works use it till it dies.

I do intend to continue to use it till it totally gives up forever Today I am just gonna be keeping an eye on it though.. it'll probably burst in to flames later It was overclocked a reasonable amount I suppose, for an NU. 100MHz on the core (325MHz -> 425MHz) and 130MHz on the memory (700MHz -> 830MHz). aaronamd Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 are any caps bulging or leaking, I had an older mobo that had a bulging AND leaking cap that would do just that, post work for any amount of time, then when it got under high load it would just crap out because of stressed components... I only think that as5 is conductive.

Finaly one day it died, so cchalogamer took off the gpu heatsink and half of the gpu block fell off onto the ground... the heatsink had never been removed before... twas dead. Well I have already removed the heatsink a couple of times since the dots and bit artifacts and ..... my core is still firmly attached to the card! It survived the night though....
