jcom Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 I would suggest 7"x12" Precision Mini Lathe which sells around $500 from www.northertool.com. I am in same situation, want to make my own CPU waterblock; but I haven't got the money to start yet.
mazakman Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 I bet a mill and a surface grinder would be good to have Surface grinders use magnetic tables, copper or aluminium can't be magnetized.
Mercury Posted November 10, 2003 Posted November 10, 2003 cnc milling machines do quite well... do you have 2 million dollars?
jpiccolo Posted November 10, 2003 Posted November 10, 2003 you could use a drill press with a routing bit, this can ruin your drills bearings though. and use a one of those things that holds the part and has screws for moving the part sidways. this will work for x and y axis. the z axis is a little more tricky. though if you want, there are lots of sites out there that show you how to make your own cnc machine. Mercury Posted November 10, 2003 Posted November 10, 2003 ahahahhaha.. hahaahahahhahahahaha... make your own cnc? wow you could buy like a thousand vapochills for the price itd cost you to make your own cnc. do you even know how a cnc works? its a computer controlled multi axis water cooled drilling machine that uses a computer 'program' coordinates which are converted into something the machine then can drill out. its much past a common computer enthusiast's knowledge how to create such a complex machine. if i were you, i would just buy water blocks. trust me, there are people who have much more experiance and resources than you, and for the price it will cost you you can get better stuff than the junk you will probably create for the first few hundred blocks you create. currently the best waterblock on the market is the dtek white water block

CNC Computerised Numerical Control. Many machines such as lathes, milling machines and drills may be electronically controlled. The required machine operations are expressed as a series of numbers given to the controller -- hence the term "numerical control", or NC. CNC machines use a computer as the controller. A cnc is just device that recives instructions from a computer, while you example was a cnc, as cnc neednt be complex, hell i could make on now with a serial port a battery and a motor

Some_Guy_ Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 I know people who have made their own CNCs for a few thousand dollars, and they're pretty sweet machines. They use theirs for mass-producing electric guitars.
