It seams as if everyone has gotten into the "Desktop Search" market now. For me I welcomed the new market. Even with a semi-strict folder layout, finding stuff was still a pain. Trying to use the archaic "Windows Search" was almost pointless.

Copernix was the first one (IIRC) to come out with a desktop search application, though I had never really heard of anything until Google launched their program. After that you had Microsft, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, and even HotBot (they aren't dead yet??) coming out with similar applications. Hell, even everyone's favorite AOL is rumored to be coming out with some kind of "desktop search".

With everything that is currently available, what do you use to find the junk on your hard drive?

Yeah I don't think I will ever use a desktop search tool. I know where all my stuff is...and I know if I did install it, it would not get used, so why install it to begin with.

I rarely use GDS, I am waiting for it to search Gmail the same time it searches my files.

There is a plugin for it to search GMail.

Depending on your HDD size, windows can take from 20 minutes to 2 hours to locate a file. These desktop searches are instant.

I tend not to do much searching, but if I do I use the built-in Windows search. One problem I have noticed is Windows tends not to search in certain directories (window, system, system32, etc) unless you specifically search in those directories. I guess if I couldn't find anything, I'd go with Google's because... well, it's Google.

Guest Jeremy

I also just use the default windows search, it works good enough for me.
