How Much Can I Overclock?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, im still thinking whether to purchase a p4 3.0ghz 800mhz fsb or an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (S939)... im getting the Thermaltake Armour Case (http://www.thermaltake.com/xaserCase/armor/va8000bws/va8000bws.htm) which allows heaps of air to get in and out of the case, plus theres 4 fans. If i wanted to OC either one, how much could i OC each and be safe?

oh and u know how all new intels are locked now, does that mean i shouldnt buy one because it will be locked? and is it possible to get it unlocked? and is the AMD locked?

Thanks

The multiplier on Intels are locked, not the FSB. Get the AMD.

As for the overclock, it's going to depend on cooling, mobo, and the chip itself.

my 3200+ is roughly equivalent to a P4 around 4.1-4.3 GHz with my oc... i have one of the better 3200's tho which seems to oc about as much as most 3500's

there is no chance of you ocing a P4 3.0 to compete with a 3500+ unless you get the best P4 3.0 in the world and the worst 3500+ in the world

I run my P4 3.0e, socket 478, at 3.675 Ghz, 245 FSB, on an Abit IC7-G Max II 24/7.

It has an xp-90 on it, I have to turn up the fans though when I am gaming, otherwise, it runs pretty cool. I can run it as high as 252, 3.78Ghz, but I backed it down from the max.

Also make sure you get good Ram, that will impact your OC. Faster FSB helps a lot.

There are a lot of factors involved, but most folks on here have AMD chips. I like Intel, but my next build might be AMD 939 for a dual core chip, but with the new ATI Crossfire solution just announced, I am rethinking that.

OK, I am not an Nvdia fan, but they do make good stuff.

AMD or Intel, go with the XP-90, and get a fan controller so you can turn the fan that you have to put on the xp-90 down when you don't need it screaming at full speed.

just out of curiosity i would like to ask here....just how much can u overclock a P43.06GHz Prescott? provided of course you have a good set of other stuff and good cooling for the cpu...my P4 of the above model is running at 3.3GHz now at idle temps of about 52C and that is still running in the arctic 5 i slapped on this morning....if i can get the temp to about 42 at idle how far can i push the processor....

also what do u guys think about the Asus Ati A9550GE 128MB DDR display? i just bought it couple of months ago and am wondering now whether i should upgrade to a saphire or something....

any ideas ppl?

Hey hard, you should see my 3200 now. I just hit 300 Mhz FSB with a 9x multi. I'm folding right now without any errors yet. This thing is insane! Earlier I posted at 2800 Mhz but it was totally unstable. Still sittin pretty at 2700 Mhz.

*Edit* Oh... Remember all that trouble I was having setting up my harddrives in raid. Well, I finally figured it out. I was so ghetto. I had to reset my overclock to stock settings and plug the drives into the 1 & 2 sata ports. Once I did that, I could install the raid drivers and windows. Then I could unplug them and move them back to the 3 & 4 sata Ports. Working great. I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier. :bah:

Aye... You are going to hear a bunch of crap about how much TT sucks and how much TR is better.... Just save your self the time and get the AMD solution. They generally run cooler and OC better. :)

I have the hardcano 10 and am very happy with it. It only has 2 channels, but I only needed 1 channel for tornado and the temp probe for my gpu. I dont use the usb/firewire it has either...if I could have gotten a 1 channel with temp probe and saved some cash I would have, but I'm also cheap as hell
