Think Of Getting Amd Athlon 64 3500+

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, im thinking of getting a AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (S939), but do u need a special OS? like a 64 bit version of Windows XP or something?

Also is getting a 3500+ better then getting a p4 3.0GHz 800mhZ fsb for overclocking?

thing is i never had an AMD and i know its locked, is it possible to get it unlocked and is it hard?

thanks

hey, are you looking at the 3500 winchester (.90nm)? I have one that i am trying to get rid of. i'll sell it for $200 shipped, i'v had it as high as 2.8

yes, it will def outperform a p4 overclocked, and no, you can use regular windows xp home/pro. It can run 32bit native apps, and also 64 bit apps, so you dont hve to upgrade to a 64bit operating system right away.

With a64's they are partially unlocked, you can lower the fsb, but not raise it. There should be no reason that you would have to have a higher multi then 11 (stock for the 3500+)

3500+ is a gerat chip, and even if you get stuck with a bad mem controller like mine you can still get a pretty good overclock with the 11x multi it has. Not many can do 2.8ghz like byrons chip though, i'd jump on that deal :) .

3500+ Great chip. get the 90nm though it runs cooler. It beats the intel hands down.

You do not need the new verion of XP to use this chip, i dont recomend gettign it either, mainy due to lack of drivers for important devices like cameras and even some motherboard components (sound/LAN/etc.) do some research before "upgrading" to XP 64

1.) 64-bit systems are backwards compatible with 32-bit apps so any OS like WinXP, etc. will work.

2.) Yes a 3500+ will spank a p4 3.0ghz in gaming, but the P4 would win in multitasking scenarios

3.) Only the FX line is unlocked down and up on the multi. All other A64s are only unlocked down which is fine since it is better to OC with a lower multi for best performance anyway.

EDIT: Yes the Venice is better as it has the strained sillicon and runs cooler which makes it a better OCer. Also, AMD's are a piece of cake to OC. There are certain things you have to learn just like on OCing a P4, but the basics are still the same.

I dont get the overclocking... What is the stock multiplier for the 3500+ venice? and to overclock do u lower the multiplayer? and then do u make the HTT bus higher? or wat? is their a tutorial or something? And is this enuff for cooling: Thermaltake Armour Case (http://www.thermaltake.com/xaserCase/armor/va8000bws/va8000bws.htm) and Thermalright XP 90C Copper Heatsink + Fan ?

Thanks

Are the Venice ones better? if so, why? and is it easy to overclock? And can i use the windows xp pro im using now for my p4 2.53ghz or will i need a Windows XP 64-bit version?

Thanks

1) Venice Cores are currently the best for overclocking, just make sure you have good RAM

2) Windows 64 Bit, canot be installed on alot of systems, due to the fact that the NVIDIA chipset does not have SATA image files, as of last time I Checked.
