Ste Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 I don't think u can do a reformat an an install over a network. the data would go through the NIC, but wouldn't do anything if there no OS to go to, I don't think a motherboard can accept these commands from a internet connection. Dr_Frankenstein Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 hmm thats annoying looks as though i will have to wait for the new dvd rom to arrive later this week then looks as though i am gonna have to stick to win 98 for now
LobbDogg Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 I'm pretty sure you can, however I think it depends on the type of NIC in the computer. It doesn't necessarily have to have a full fledge OS to recevie network data. Now I've never done this, but I know there are a few people on here who work as network admins and I would think that atleast some of them have done Network installs of XP. I know its possible, just haven't done it myself.
Dr_Frankenstein Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 aha i think i am on to something i may be able to do it using a network boot disk http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/network/
cybergrunt69 Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 Yes, it is possible, but it's a PITA to set up. On the client side, you need a supported NIC (which is most of them) and a boot floppy. Easy. On the server side, you need a Win2K/Win2K3 server running as a domain controller, as well as DNS, DHCP, and RIS (remote installation services). Not quick, not as easy. It's definately worth putting some time into, cause it's kinda cool to use. WinXP RIS http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...bc_cai_byil.asp Doc for Win2k - deploy and using remote installs: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techi...CCM/chapt-8.asp Win2K RIS: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techi...remotesteps.asp Doc for Win23 - automating & customizing installs: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en have fun reading... NCC10281982B Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 I've done this with win 2k. Get the i386 folder of the OS you want to install and share it on the network somewere. Run winnt32.exe from the shared folded on the win 98 box. You can use winnt.exe to install from a dos envroment. PM if U need more help.
