that's the most important part.

BUT

technically all 940 or 939 pins are not used. there are many redundant ground pins and key way pins (to aid morons in NOT installing them the wrong way). both chips have different numbers of these pins. keep in mind that there are actually 3 differences between the 940 chips and the 939 chips.

1 ECC ram

2 SMP Support (multiple HT channels)

3 1600mhz HT vs 2000mhz HT (Problem fixed on 90 nm opterons though)

On the topic of 939 vs. 940, i was going to upgrade my mainboard and CPU this summer to a 3500+ Venice core w/ S939 mainboard, but one of my buddies said to wait it out until there are more 940 boards available that can support more S940 CPUs.. He said an Opteron should be my next upgrade... i currently sport a S754 Athlon 64 3400+ Clawhammer. Its already fast enough.. it keeps me satisfied... but eventually im going to want to upgrade to something better..

any recommedations?

why would you go 940 in a desktop pc anymore? if you look at it, no one is making anymore single cpu 940 boards anymore... wonder why? it has something to do with registered ECC ram being required and the cost vs performance difference in single chip 940 vs 939.

tell your friend he needs to stop reading articles from 18 months ago when the top performing athlon FX 51 was socket 940.
