Capo Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 (edited) How is this laptop for approximately 1000 bucks after rebates? http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-Pavilion...roductDetail.do The main thing im concerned about is the video card, how is that thing? If it's too gimpy, could I purchase another laptop video card and replace it or would I be stuck with that one? The no interest for 1.5 years is nice plus 1000 bucks is really my cap... if not this one, does anyone have any other suggestions? txtiggerr Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 nice laptop but not for gaming if that is what you are after
gunak87 Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 You wouldn't be able to replace that video card.
Capo Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 The laptop would not particularly be for gaming, but I want the option for some gaming when needed (ie - traveling, bored away from home, etc.) -- That is why I was concerned. Also, If I cannot replace that card is there someform of a "low/mid - mid line" gaming notebook that is better than that one for around 1 grand? Also, since Im not very familiar with notebook hardware, can someone give a comparison to a comprable PC video card, just for comparison sake? Is it usually safe to do so?
The_Goonie Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 they are under HP's warranty....so it really wouldn't matter
GmAz Posted June 7, 2005 Posted June 7, 2005 i have sold a couple of those to family members not that long ago. ITs a nice laptop. As for gaming, though these guys are right, they are also wrong. YOu won't be able to play like doom3 or HL2 or any high graphics game on there. however, you will be able to play some older games (only a year or so old) on there just fine. I have played guild wars on it just fine. I personally have the HP zd8110 laptop. Though I wish it had an AMD64 chip instead of a 3ghz P4 HT, it gots 1gb of ram, x600pro processor which playes HL2 really really nicely and pretty much does everythign i want it to do. Its also a little more money. However, it still doens't compare to my desktop in my signature.
cchalogamer Posted June 7, 2005 Posted June 7, 2005 That's odd my friend's 440go can do hl2 pretty good at lower settings, you should be just fine with this one, just expect to like playing your older favorites instead of new hits on it. CNUco2007 Posted June 7, 2005 Posted June 7, 2005 this is what i got. you can reduce things for a cheaper price of course, but apple has a student discount. I got an ibook g4 for $996 shipped. Here's what it has: 1.2Ghz G4 12" LCD 1024x768 30gb HDD DVD-ROM/CD-RW Radeon 9200 mobile Wireless G Card 6 hours battery life (i get between 4-5) OS X 10.4 4.9lbs and of course the build quality is much much better than any PC laptop. plus OS X is perfect for everything except gamin lol. if you program at all, OS X is great for that cuz its based on UNIX and there is a UNIX terminal. you can install all the usualy compilers too. I bought the laptop for school so i can cruise the internet, chat, type papers, program, and anything else i can think of. i dont game on it though. i have my desktop PC to do that. lol But yea, this is a great laptop for the money. fully featured, looks great, performs great, and it will last. I know alot of ppl are going to disagree w/ me on apples, but they probably haven't used one recently either. haha Oh, if you want to know how to get the student discount, just PM me and i'll explain how. NOTE: not a gaming laptop but ulra portable for almost everything else

Especially with a 12" screen!! As for the video card, I think if you order it custom you can change the video card to a X600, not sure though. Check out HP's site. I have a dell inspiron XPS myself, certainly not in the same catagory as the one you're looking at but it's fine for me. As for playing games, if I could maintain a decent framerate with a 32MB creative annihilator dx 7 video card, you would be able to play doom3 with that laptop and low detail, I think. Oh and from what I hear Dell laptops are pretty good, don't know much about HP though:)
CNUco2007 Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 there's nothing wrong w/ 12" screens. i prefer them. i dont like big laptops cuz it defetes the purpose. the laptop i was talking about is much more portable. smaller, lighter, and batt lasts longer. but ur right, when it comes to power the other one is better. when i got my laptop, i wasnt looking for power though. i still have my desktop PC. the apple is just great for a portable computer to cruise the net, chat, type papers, program, etc. ur right in that its not as powerful but it serves its purpose better in other areas such as portablility.
