Pentium M Or Athlon 64 3200+

I was looking to get a new mobo and CPU and I keep hearing about these Dothans crushing things.

 

I already have a board that can be converted to allow a P M to fit. Should I save and buy a P M or go athlon? If what I am reading correctly on these forums, if you oc the pent it will stand up to the best of the A64's? Is this true?

Supposedly clock for clock those Dothans are faster than an FX-55, but the problem is I have never seen one OC higher than 2.8ghz. It depends on what you want to use it for. Gaming - A64, multitasking - P M, etc. you know the drill on that.

With the different cache setup in the P M I would think it would be more suited for gaming then the previous or still current P4..?

i have seen the dothnans FLY, but personaly, i am an intel man converted to AMD, i would say get the 3200+ and OC it, the vennices OC very well

the benchies go back and forth. it really seems to depend on what you're doing. though on average the athlon 64 IS going to perform better in this thing called "the real world".

I mean if Pentium M"s were all "that"

then you'd hear a whole lot more about them

Pentium Ms are very fast clock for clock. They are also very energy effecient. Problem is that they, and the motherboards for them are expensive. They are also (contrarty to what some have said) poor multi-taskers, slighty worse than A64s, alot worse than HT P4s in this area, and obviousl way worse than any dual core or dual processor system.

 

If you can afford a good dothan and a good board (one of the new i915, or an ASUS i875 with the 479 adaptor) it would make a gaming system that would rival an overclocked FX-55. It would also keep up with the top of the line in most other areas, as long as you ran single threaded programs one at time.
