Joker08 Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 (edited) Hello, this is my first time, just need a little help. I just built a computer, once i plugged it all in, it didnt work, go figure. It is not getting any power, someone told me to check the the psu by putting a paper clip in the green slot and a black slot, and that worked, showed that the psu works, but when i plug it into the mobo i get nothing, the fan on the power supply does not even turn on. does this just mean my mother board is bad? i bought it brand new, it is a ECS elitegroup KT600-A agp8x mobo. any ideas? i started with everyhting plugged in, then unplugged everything to just the four little plugs, including the power switch and reset button, and the leds or whatever, and then just the plug from teh psu to the mobo.please let me know. thanks Joker Edited May 24, 2005 by Joker08

Id also try "jumping the power button by hitting on the two pins with a screwdriver.
martymcfly Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 did you use standoffs?
Guest Raven65 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Make sure that your four pin ps for the cpu is plugged in. It's white like the 20 pin ps. also make sure all your plugs are tight and your agpand pci cards are seated properly then also your ram and cpu. Onyks Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 http://www.ecsusa.com/products/kt600-a.html theres his mobo if anyone can help better... i got nothin. although i am confused by "the psu works... the fan on the psu wont come on". i would have to say first guess.. something isnt plugged in correctly somewhere. i know just a couple of weeks ago i pulled out the (neg) wire to my power switch when putting in a hard drive. check all your connections especially the 20 pin and 4 pin power adapters to the mobo. Joker08 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 (edited) its prob this.. the power switch is not in the mobo right.. check that.. that was my first mistake.. lol.. 482385[/snapback] i jumped the power supply with a paper clip, the fan came on then, but when i tried plugging it into the motherboard then the fan did not come on. what all needs to be plugged in, whats the most barebones i can have just to make sure it is working? instead of plugging everything in, what are the essentials? what are standoffs? thanks for the help Edited May 25, 2005 by Joker08
Whitelightning Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Take the mobo out of the case and hook eveything up, make sure the mobo is on an antistatic bag or something non conductive. If it fires up then the mobo was grounding out on the case. I had the same problem and it turned out the mobo was grounding out on the case. Standoffs are little screw like things that screw into your mobo and your mobo sits on them, these are used so your mobo does not sit directly on the case. CmpFreak88 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Standoffs are little insulators you put between the motherboard and the case to prevent it from shorting. Did you make sure to put those in? You know the power supply works, so just make sure you have everything else plugged in right, Video, Audio, Memory, CPU. Oh, and in response to Whitelightnings idea, do take it out of the case, but NEVER put computer components ontop of the antistatic bags! Antistatic bags keep the static outside the bags and that could ruin your components!
Whitelightning Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I have never had a problem using anit-static bags...They prevent esd not create it.

CmpFreak88 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Here we go How to be ESD Savvy End of the sixth paragraph "...because, static charges accumulate on unprotective surfaces and may discharge through components." The inside prevents ESD, not the outside Oh, and Joker, the only stuff that needs to be in is Video, Memory, CPU.
