Remote Desktop is kind of tricky at first, but once you get it you are good.

First off, the Server, the computer you are accessing, as to be connected to the internet. If you are going through a NAT device, you can reach it. If you are using a router, like one of those linksys boxes, you can't reach it from the internet.

I have two NIC's in one computer so I can remote it, and I use Internet connection shareing on the other NIC, which goes to a regular hub / switch.

If you are using the router, and you have two computers, then work on hitting it on the same side of the NAT device. Just type in the IP address using the Remote desktop client, which you can install on several OS's and is available in XP Home and Pro.

Oh yea, make sure that you enable it on the server machine.

MY computer | Properties |remote | Allow Remote Access

You have to set up a use that can access it. If you can't find the user names to click on, just start clicking buttons until a list of users come up and then you can add them.

Once you have it working, you should be able to connect from just about any where. I use it all the time. Also, make sure antivirus and or software firewall is not getting in the way. Sometimes they can be a pain. If you think that is causeing problems, just turn them all off until you get through, then turn them back on one at a time until you find the problem.

You have the right idea there bionic sniper. You can reach the computer for anywhere in the world as long as you forward port 3389 to the server acting as the terminal server. What I recommend is that you go to www.dyndns.org and sign up for a free account. When you do that you can choose any name you with for a dynamic dns account, that way when your away from home you can access your server by typing something like myserver.gotdns.com instead of 123.123.123.123 get it? I have used dyndns.org for about three years and they are wonderful.

What I do recommend more than terminal services though is something called RealVNC They have a free version, but if you can affor it I would get the enterprise edidtion. With vnc you can access your computer remotely through firefox, ie etc... using java. That means you can access it from linux, unix, windows whatever from anywhere in the world. It also has a proprietary viewer program, but I think the java version is the best reason to use it. All you have to do is install the realvnc software, then forward whatever port you want (default= 5900) on the router to the server you want to use. And the nice thing about vnc too is that you can choose which ports you want to use. Unlike terminal server where you can only forward one port and control one computer with vnc you can forward ports 5900 5901 5902 to three different computers and get access to all of them from the internet.

This is a pretty small explanation, but I think you can get the gist of it. If you need any more help understanding it or have any questions let me know.

Im always glad to help :)

i use "realvnc" DLable at realvnc.com, its pretty much a walkthrough to set up, and to access it, type your IP in the realVNC client and then the PW and your in. i never really messed with RD cuz i was used to realVNC from linux. just foward ports 5900-5901

one more thing too. If you get the enterprise edition you can use windows nt authentication for the pw, instead of clear text, and you can serve java and vnc on the same port so you dont have to forward 2 ports for one computer.

check your pms bionic
