Kamikaze_Badger Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 What are some programs that you can use to repair the MBR (Main Boot Region) on a hard drive without losing any existing data? I have to use a crappy 4,200 RPM hard drive for my C drive because my 80 gigs' MBR is bad, according to my brother. So, anybody know what programs I can use? gunak87 Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 Isn't it Master Boot Record? I could be wrong, though. I boot with my XP disk in and go to the recovery console. I can't remember teh command, but just type help.
Kamikaze_Badger Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 Problem is... I don't have my XP disk. My brother lost it. EDIT: Turns out, the OEM XP Pro disk my mom ordered from Newegg arrived today . I'll try what you said.

andrusk Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 yeah, from the recovery console the command is 'fixmbr' or you can use a windows 98 boot disk and use the command 'fdisk /mbr' They do the same thing. And yeah, its called the master boot record.
MasterRex862 Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 Master Boot Record. Master. MasterRex862. I am happy. Hey KB, is your brother one of those who thinks he is better than you at computers? ( But really isn't? ) Just ask us some of your problems instead of him, do a really hard repair job on something and tell him it was easy + simple. Show him up! Well, glad you guys figured it out, I would have just said to foramt and reinstall!
Kamikaze_Badger Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 He's being working with computers for 6 years now... he's better than I am. This is my older brother, the one guy I respect in this family.
