Vooduu Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 i am interested in building a folding rig just for that purpose.nothing else.is there a cpu, memory limit i should at least start from?plus will any low end brands or cheapy stuff work,or should i go for a reputable name, but a lower end model.any suggestions would be helpful. BabyBalrog Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 Here's what you need a CPU that Support SSE2 ( P4, AthlonXP, Celeron ) depending on the OS you can get by wiht 256 RAM, but with WinXP or WIN64 You need 512. I say anything less then a 2.4 Northwood isn't worth the money to pay for. I'd recomend looking at the Sempron 3100+ the onboard memory controller really helps, and the K8 Arcitechure is supurb. Get one with a cheepest MOBO you can find and a single stick of 256 RAM (lower latencies better but not requiered) and run linux, or one 512 with XP, Partition a small HDD and put the F@H files on an outside partition OS on second and boom you got a rig

I bumped it up to 512Mb and didn't notice any performance gains.
sykocus Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 yah i would say you'll be find with 256 on xp if you aren't going to actually use the computer. I don't know, but i would think a celeron would work just as good as a p4 with the same clock speed. i don't think cache size affects folding that much. also i didn't think athlon xp's had sse2 support. while it's not required it does help out a lot on many work units. ccokeman Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I'm using a p4 1.6a @ 2.6 and it does better than the 3.0 i have crunching away.It loves qmd core wu's. I'm putting the 2nd duron back on line tonite so it can fold. I have a 700mhz duron with 256mb of ram and running timeless wu's its good for about 30 points a day. cchalogamer Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 the celly's are a GREAT option for folding, my 2.66P4 cant outrun my 2.5 celly if i run them both at 2.9, it all woks pretty much the same. save soem cash and go sempron/celly
BabyBalrog Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 I've been playing around with foldign and i think it really likes faster FSB, so lower clocked units when clocked the same as a higher one have better FSB, also why AMD64 really work wonders, the F@H "core" is betweek 700Kb and 3Mb, plus data, so cach unter 512 really doesnt matter ( P4 vs Celly) but the P4EE really got a boost from the extra cache, nto sure about the prescotts. But the one meg cache s745 AMD64s beet the s939 ones at same clock speed because of the cache. to sykocus I think ( could alway sbe wrong ) that the Athlons only had SSE ( one) but the XP's has SSE2
Vooduu Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 thanks guys for the input.1 more question.since a folding rig is always on 24/7,wouldnt a decent power supply be a factor to.if not i guess any cheapo thing will do?
godmode117 Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 also you dont need a hdd just recongiure overcloix
BabyBalrog Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 most any power supply is ok, jsut get a quality named brand not a nock off, but you odnt need an high end PSU by anymeans. and yes you can skip the HDD IF you set up your system to run from CD or off the network
