How Do I Get All My Drive Space

Recommended Posts

i have a 200GB hard disk and can only get 189GB out of it.

Is there a way to get the full 200 GBout of the drive, and why do you loose 11 GB of space? Or is it just the drive is labled incorrectly and should realy read 200,000,000,000B?

Windows is a pig.....after a format a certain amount is always missing due to its file allocation system, also, a 200 gig is never a 200 gig, its usually rounded up at the manufacturer, also, even new drives contain a certain amount of bad sectors, these are locked out at the manufacturer. Hope I helped, yeah it sucks, My 160's only show up as 156 or something like that...so thats normal....

Do you have SP2? I think that allows you to get more space out of your harddrive.

They're labeled incorrectly, some companies say that 200,000,000,000 is 200GB, while its actually more, remember, 1024b=1kb etc, so you're actually getting the space that the drive is saying it is.

HD manufacturers define 1 gig as 1000 MB (10^3) and one MB as 100 KB and one KB as 1000 bytes. Windows defines it as 1024 (2^10). So 200000000000/1024/1024/1024 = 186 GB. The manufacturer actually sorta went over the advertised space. But it is normal. And jeremy, if he can see anything more than 137 GB, sp1 at least is installed.
