CrackHead Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 Alright well this is the first time I have ever encountered this so it had me stumped. The monitor wont reconize the computer. I ruled out broken monitor by pluging it into my laptop. When I pluged my monitor into the computer in question, I get the usual error message on the screen of check cable yada yada yada. Wieredest thing about this hole situation is my computer wont turn off. Well thats the wrong term but I have to hold in the powerbutton for what seems like forever before it will turn off. But get this I turn it off by the switch unplug the power cable from the computer, then plug the power cable back in and the computer turns on I didnt flip the switch or anything... I figured somthing got fried somewhere along the lines so I am going to run it barebone and try to determine the problem if you have any suggestions letme know. Ste Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 (edited) The video card might be dead, the connector on the video card your trying to use VGA or DVI may be damged or broken. Check the Bios and setting on the PC for power save options. may find something. Edited May 5, 2005 by Ste
CrackHead Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 Graphics card I belive is seated properly, it is screwed down so I don't think it is going anywere nor have I had a problem with that before. As for this capabule of posting that is a possiblility but I have never heard of that nor think that I have ever experienced that with this computer before... Could I have fried the switch on the mobo and cuz that to do the same thing? The monitor cable is fine, ran that monitor on laptop and it worked flawlessly. As for the bios I can't check it becuase I can't view the screen. Oh sorry forgot to give computer specs, its is an old pentium 2 computer running off I belive is an intel motherboard. The video card card is a PCI slot card with a vga port.
Ste Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 (edited) Try cleariong CMOS if all else fails and just for the hell of it reseat Video card and blow slot out, make sure there are no loose cables and no cables touching motherboard. Try Booting with motherboard outside of case. Are there any Error Beeps from speaker? Edited May 5, 2005 by Ste

kobalt Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 I've had that problem too with the switch i turned off the PC and it stayed on i also had to hold the switch for a good 10 seconds before it went off. I finally changed the momentary switch it was not sending the signal properly.
crash Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 That is a common problem when a peice of HW is malfuncioning or loose. The mobo will get power but to turn it off the BIOS must be loaded. The bios turns off the PSU in a ACPI system unless you hold the power switch down and that bypasses the bios and sends a signal to the PSU to shut off. If the comp shuts off when you hold the button for 5 secs the switch is good. If you have a faulty peice of HW the comp will power up but the bios may not load. I would check your vid card, then memory, then CPU. Good luck
