Why Not Layers

Recommended Posts

I've always used layers to make webpages . but the more I see of other peoples web pages the more I see I am in the minority.

Layers are much simpler to make and you can place a layer over a layer if your careful.

But macromedia and adobe and all the others seem to use tables not layers.

I suppose they could be making webs in layers and then using dreamweaver to convert them to tables.

Anyone?

:blink::D:angry::rolleyes::P:withstupid:

I think using Tables is easier.

Layers tend to do funkey things from browser to browser, and if not done correctly can make your page look very bad.

yeah but most of the wierd stuff with layers happens when you place a layer within a layer.

you can pace a layer over a layer but not within one

eg

that will not work properly in netscape.

and anyway the best way is probably to make a site in layers and then use dreamweaver to convert the layers to tables.

then you get the best of both worlds

and you must also set the layer position to absolute and then no problems happen in other browsers.

the only problem with layers is that they definitely won't work in IE 3 nn3

but who the hell uses that anyway

Why convert from layers to tables? That's just extra work, and you could run into problems with the tables not coming out correctly. Just code in tables, and life is easy.

Uhh...you mean layers like Photoshop layers I guess. Even though it's only been 1-1.5 years since I really learned HTML I've never even heard of anyone using frames...Tables just work really well in most browsers (but the Palm OS browser, Blazer, is the worst thing ever because they cache everything and nothing updates so they save money on data transfer) and they are customizable and you know what you're going to see when you code them.

I'd say its a browser issue. I recently learned html and I think tables are just the way to go. Tables make my site much easier.
