RimX Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 Hey Well I'm helping my friend with his laptop. And well, XP wont install...He was having trouble will playing/installing stuff. He would gett errors about corrupted files and well decided to try and reformat and reinstall. well we tried to install XP pro and its gets to registering components and says there is 17 min left and thats as far as it goes. then we tried home which is what came with it...and well same thing but 14 min and nothing...when we tried to do a full format it did like 2% and stopped...So I'm thinking its the HDD...the laptop is a Dell XPS...any ideas

cybergrunt69 Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 Just call Dell's support line, and tell them you're having problems reinstalling the OS, using the disks they supplied (either full OS or system restore disk), and they will get a new HDD to ya! If it's out of warranty, I don't know if an insurance company will cover that... Â If nothing else, new laptop hard drives aren't that expensive lately. the11ama Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 I agree with The Goonie, it is very likely a memory problem. But run checkdisk first and scan for bad sectors and surface problems... that might take care of the problem. If that doesn't fix the problem, run memtest86, and then test the memory sticks by themselves to find the bad stick(s).
Guest Raven65 Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 sounds like a common Hd problem, don't think it's a memory problem. What kind of hd is it. if it's a maxtor dl their hd testing program. When my SATA power plug was a little loose i had the problem the reformat would stop at about 50% . pushed it in and lo and behold it worked. It sounds like a hd problem.
