CPU_Cooker Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 I in my second machin, I have two 30GB drives. One segate and one maxtor. The Segate is about 5 years old, and it has become very loud. It is not the disk access, but the spin of the drive that is loud. Is there anything I can do other than replacing the drive? Hyper Threaded Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 I'm no expert on hard drives, but maybe they're overheating? The hard drive in mum's dell makes that same noise, I think it's the bearings or the motor. Start making backups of your important stuff, drive could be going to pot. exeter_acres Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 Not much you can do...older drives were just noisy.... you can ty an silence them by suspending it... or using rubber grommets to mount them so there is no metal to metal contact... there are enclosures, but they seem a bit expensive and a bit risky due to heat.... short of replacing (and new drives are Dirt cheap) there really isn't much
Guest Raven65 Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 Spray it with some great stuff insulation. It should keep the noise down. No really it's an older HD, they get loud. See if you can find a noise dampener. That's about it. either that or change it.
