Full 64 bit support (long before Windows),light and easy for low spec systems to run quickly, some distro's can be run solely from a cd-rom. Open source so lots of people have written free software for it like GIMP and Open office etc,

I like that Linux gives you the ability to get down into the guts of the system if you *need* to. Not everybody needs the command line everyday. But I think that is one of Linux's greatest strengths over Windows. Nothing is hidden and locked away from you.

linux is MUCH stabler in systems with litle ram or a not so great processor. It feels smoother when run and doesn't require constant maintnance.

If your Windows requires constant maintenance, then you probably went wrong somewhere in installation, or it's a PEBCAK.
