g_bones Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 I've been having some weird problems from my 6800 Ultra lately, and think they may be from a lack of power. What kind of things will a video card robbed of power do besides the normal lockups?
Nerm Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 artifact, slow bootups, lockups in games and benches, won't OC hardly at all, etc.
tbone2sk Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 low rails, blue screens. I would get a DMM and check your rails. You have to put it with a multimeter.
g_bones Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 I'm getting weird stuff. Sometimes I'll hear a beep from the pc speaker and the applictation I have open will minimize. Just the other night I was playing "Battle for Middle Earth" online and every 10 seconds or so, the screen would go black, with a few places staying fuzzy, where you could barely see through it. It would stay that way for a few seconds, then go away for a few. I've also noticed large voltage swings on the 12V through MBM (no multimeter, sorry) that weren't there before, and once got a Nvidia error "too low voltage" message. (Don't guess I need to question that.) PC specs are: Abit NF7-S Barton 2500+ eVGA 6800 Ultra 1 gig Kingston ram 6 case fans 2 optical drives 1 hard drive Antec True430
littleaznkid Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 define the 6 case fan. is it all tornado?! or high powered? I still think you should be okay with that 430watts. but if nvidia says too little voltage, you should think about new PSU. does your PSU run really hot?(not like warm hot like hot hot)
Kash Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 Isn't the bare minimum for a 6800Ultra at least 450 Watts?
tbone2sk Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 I have seen people ya a lot of probelms with that psu and the 6800u. If you like soldering, then there is a easy way to fix that psu, by doing a sense wire mod. Just tell me if you would like to do the mod, and I can find the link. g_bones Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 The 6 case fans are 80mm fans pushing 32cfm. 5 of them are LED. I thought I might be able to squeak by with that psu, but really don't want to fry anything. Do these problems sound power related, or does it sound like something else? And tbone, I'm not sure I could pull off the soldering, but shoot me the link if you have it and I'll give it a look.
tbone2sk Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 It does not sound like you know what you would be doing, so I do not think it is wise for you to mod your psu. It still is a easy mod. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37574
gravy Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 my old thermaltake was solid until i tried to push really high vcore and vdimm and attempt a 1Ghz OC with a Prescott CPU, then it just cut off, fine after that, i dont even know if it was the PSU, but after i put in this Antec 550W it doesn't do it anymore thanks for the link tbone, i just looked at my psu and learned mine already has sense wires on all three rails
g_bones Posted April 13, 2005 Posted April 13, 2005 Yeah, I don't think I'll be trying that mod. I can see me really messing things up and being stuck with nothing. Guess I need to find a new PSU.
