gravy Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 so on my new build i am thinking about eliminating my floppy drive altogether, anyone else done this, any issues, any regrets?
CNUco2007 Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 i still get a floppy for 2 reasons: 1) You still need it to load certain drivers like RAID drivers when installing Windows. 2) It's only like $8, so why not? haha
anthony Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 might as well have one, sme times you may need it better to hvae it sitting there than to instal it when you need it,
evanin Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 I have one, I used it like 10 times in a year for various things like memtest. It is worth it for >$
Kash Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 (edited) You pretty much need it for low level system stuff like BIOS updates (it's becoming common to do this through Windows now), setting up RAID/SATA drives in Windows (some SATA drives don't even need the drivers anymore), memtest (you can do this via some Linux LiveCD distros), and running hard disk diagnostics. So you still need a floppy for a few things right now, but I'm guessing in a few more years, it'll be completely phased out. So keep it for now, but for your next build, you might not need it. cchalogamer Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 I dont have room for one in my shuttle with 3 HDDs (yeah add in a 160GB not listed in the sig I dont regret it the least bit. I plan on a new full sized build withing the next month, wont be putting a floppy in it either. I just never use one. Ive had a need for one a single time in the last year. I went over to my hp and coppied the one file that i needed on a floppy from my Shuttle directly to the floppy. Im not sying trash every floppy in the house, but I persoanally dont need them. GameGuru1 Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 I don't have a floppy in my latest rig. I've had it for 10 months now, never needed a floppy for any reason.

gravy Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 i've already got one, but i dont really want to use the room in my case for it, want the hard drives to have room to breathe, no other place to put it since i modified my case to hold my h2o stuff my BIOS flashes through windows so i dont need it for that isn't there a way to slip the SATA/RAID drivers onto my windows install disc? i've already slipped XP Pro with SP2 and unattanded install answer file any problems getting a pc to boot off of a USB floppy drive? that sounds like the best thing to do for me does the windows install process specifically ask for a disc in drive A to install RAID/SATA drivers from or does it allow you to tell it where they are?
