A customer brings in a old 100Mhz computer yesterday and asks me to load Win98 on it. He tells me not to spend over 1 hour on it, I say ok no problem. He tells me that its reformated and its been done on the system tons of time and he made sure he did it right, so I ask why he wasn't installing windows himself, he tells me he doesn't feel like it. I think to myself ok something odd here, so he leaves and I begin to check out the beast. It had 28MB memory and 2X400MB harddrives One CDROM One Floppy. So right away I try the usual to install win98, of course it only see's the secondary harddrive so ya what a start, I listen for the primary and I can here it clicking so I stop what I am doing and wait for him to come back. He finally shows up and I tell him what I have found now here comes the intresting part....

He says oh I figured you were going to have a problem because you need to hook up the voltage machine to tell the harddrive to communicate to the CPU

I was like say what

So then he tries to explain that there is a little box that you have to hook up to the PC to get it to work, so I say to him its the controllers that make the communication really. He then says no you need this box that helps charge the harddrive, but if you give it to much voltage it can blow the CPU. I am totally lost at this point so I ask him are you sure its not an external Harddrive or something, and he says NO....

He then trys to tell me that all computer programmers use them now a days

Can someone enlighten me please

Ya know I have been a tech for a while now and I was thinking for a split second that maybe there was such a thing back in the day, but then I figure I would have heard about it from somewhere <_>

Ok, let's assume you have this hypothetical "voltage machine" and are successful in getting the "hardrive to communicate to the CPU" (whatever) and once the hard drive is "fully charged" - how the heck does he plan to use his PC once he gets home and he doesn't have the magical box any more?

:withstupid: haha literally! red is liable to straighten you out if ya send him anymore idiotic customer's than he already has. lol bosco that is hilarious. Let me guess the guy is older and the "tech" he is refering to with the "box" works at Staples right? haha Anytime a customer comes in here saying they have had problems with a previous tech I automatically assume they have just came from the local Staples lol.
