Help Choosing The Right Ram

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm pretty much done shopping for my new system, and I'm pretty happy with what I've found out so far, thanks to the helpful people on this site.

The only component I havent picked yet is the RAM. Haven't shop for ram in a while, and honestly never shopped for higher end RAM before. I want to try to keep the price as low as possible, but will buy higher end if worth it (major improvement in OC, not a Mhz race)

To the best of your knowledge, what would be the best price/quality deal in the following, for a system based on an A64 3200 (Winchester S939) for OC on MSI Neo2 Plat with Thermalright 90XP heatsink (or other suggestion ?) : Prices are in Can $

CORSAIR VALUE SELECT DUAL CHANNEL 1024MB KIT PC3200 DDR CAS2.5 2X512MB 210 $

OCZ DUAL CHANNEL PREMIER 2X512MB DDR PC3200 CAS2.5 3-3-7 W/ COPPER HEAT SPREADER 240 $

KINGSTON HYPERX 1024MB DUAL CHANNEL KIT PC3200 2X512MB DDR 400MHZ 184PIN 280 $

CORSAIR TWINX1024-3200C2PRO PC3200 2X512MB CAS2 HEAT SPREADER ACTIVITY LEDS 2-3-3 330 $

OCZ DUAL CHANNEL EL GOLD EDITION MEMORY REV3 1024MB 2X512MB PC3700 CAS2.5 GOLD HEAT SPREADER 340 $

KINGSTON HYPERX 1024MB DUAL CHANNEL KIT PC3200 2X512MB DDR 400MHZ 184PIN ULTRA LOW LATENCY CL2-2-2-5 340 $

CORSAIR TWINX1024-4000 PC4000 2X512MB DDR 3-4-4-8 SILVER HEAT SPREADER 345 $

MUSHKIN 1GB DUAL CHANNEL 2X512 PC3200 2-2-2 LEVEL 2 V2 WITH HEAT SPREADER 346 $

OCZ EL PC3200 400MHZ DDR 1024MB DUAL CHANNEL GOLD VX MEMORY KIT 2X512MB CL-2-2-2-8 184PIN 350 $

To me, both the Corsair Value (210) and OCZ premier (240) fall in a much more resonable price range. However, if it is impossible to obtain good OC with those (ex 250 mhz, 1T cas 3) then, I'll go in an high category. Without knowing much, I think the OCZ EL GOLD REV3 PC3700 would be my best bet (highly regarded in reviews, said to be able to run at 270 mhz @ 2.5 3:3:8).

Thanks in advance for you help !

thanks a lot just watched the vid. Overall he was very impressed with it. I'm not to sure if you meant Worth nothing by : most value ram is wront NOTHING.. (probably a typo). If so, 255 Mhz would not be good @ Cas 2.5 for Value ram ?!

I'd recommend anything with tccd chips. My patriot tccd memory  plays very well with my A64 and still holds nice timings at 310mhz. And it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

310 Mhz ? Holy !! What kind of OC are you getting to with your CPU ?

I see a lot of recommendations for Gskill and Patriot XBL all over the place. Unfortunatly I haven't found a place that sells those in Canada (Montreal to be specific). That or an Estore that would ship at a decent rate. The list I mentioned in my first post was what was avaliable at the time. If you find me a safe place, I might go for those. Thanks again for all your help so far, greatly appreciated.

Since i have a 2800 my multi is locked from 9 down so i decided to see how how of an fsb overclock i could get and still be stable. I can hit 7.5 x 315 stable (memory 1:1) but it takes a crap load of voltage cause i'm using a junk 350w that has crap rails. And that puts me in temp ranges i don't like. So i don't run it that high as just a day to day thing just for benchs and bragging rights. I hope to get that high with lower voltage when i get my new 600w. Does newegg not ship to canada (i don't really know) because thats where i got mine.

I see. Well, lets say I grab a Winchester 3200 what would be the multi lock (if you happen to know, if not I'll look around) ? My PSU is an ANTEC NeoPower 480 W which is really good and said to be rock stable at fairly demanding OC heights.

And I don`t think newegg ships to Canada... dang !
