Inu_Yasha Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 (edited) Ok, I'm extremely new to the AMD64 scene and I'm planning on upgrading to this processor... My friend's mobo died on him and he wants to buy my old mobo and proc... My main question is, I'm looking at geting the AMD 64 socket 939 and am wondering if there are any differences in the Winchester vs Newcastle? I was planning on getting the AMD 64 3000+ because of the low price tag, but noticed that the 3500+ has the newcastle core... I was just wondering if there are any performance upgrades on the two. Also, what is a good heatsink and mobo for this proc? Edited January 25, 2005 by Inu_Yasha
Capslock118 Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Well i have the 64 3000+ winchester and to be honest...im very happy with it, it hasnt given me any reason to not like the chip...i dont have the newcastle so i cant coment on that..... but im just saying, for the price tag, the 3000+ is a good buy

Inu_Yasha Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 WOW, quick response times there. What about mobo and heatsink?
kendellrt Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Check my sig. That is the best mobo if you want to stick with AGP. It is well known as a great board, overclocking or not. If you would like to go with PCI-e, then you have a few choices in nForce 4 boards. I don't think that SLI is worth it yet, but if you are going to get a new video card and everything an nForce 4 would be a good choice. Read this srticel about SLI, and you can see why I don't think it is the way to go yet, aside from the cost. http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NzEx Oh, and for the HSF, I really like mine, but I would suggest the Thermalright XP_90 witha Panaflo fan. They were out of stock everywhere when I built my system.
Inu_Yasha Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I was also considering the Asus A8V; would you consider the MSI k8N over taht?

I am a big Asus fan, and have had many of their boards, but the MSI is just better.
Fireonice Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 go with a 90nm winni with some sort of zalmen or thurmalright h/s. if your going apg the msi neo plat 2 is a no brainer.
sasybotnoodlehead Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 how is it possible to throw on a 120mm fan on an XP_90? isnt the heatsink too big for it? got an example or tutorial site? thanks
kendellrt Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 how is it possible to throw on a 120mm fan on an XP_90? isnt the heatsink too big for it? got an example or tutorial site? thanks 403752[/snapback] I don't think anybody suggested throwing a 120mm on the XP-90. I am suggesting the 92mm medium fow Panaflow fan that Thermalright recommends.
Inu_Yasha Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 what about the XP-120? i was thinking of that one instead...
kendellrt Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 The XP-120 does not fit on the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum without bending some capacitors. I personally don't want to do that, so I would get the XP-90.
