Amd 64 Question

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm extremely new to the AMD64 scene and I'm planning on upgrading to this processor... My friend's mobo died on him and he wants to buy my old mobo and proc...

My main question is, I'm looking at geting the AMD 64 socket 939 and am wondering if there are any differences in the Winchester vs Newcastle? I was planning on getting the AMD 64 3000+ because of the low price tag, but noticed that the 3500+ has the newcastle core... I was just wondering if there are any performance upgrades on the two.

Also, what is a good heatsink and mobo for this proc?

Check my sig. That is the best mobo if you want to stick with AGP. It is well known as a great board, overclocking or not. If you would like to go with PCI-e, then you have a few choices in nForce 4 boards. I don't think that SLI is worth it yet, but if you are going to get a new video card and everything an nForce 4 would be a good choice. Read this srticel about SLI, and you can see why I don't think it is the way to go yet, aside from the cost.

Oh, and for the HSF, I really like mine, but I would suggest the Thermalright XP_90 witha Panaflo fan. They were out of stock everywhere when I built my system.

I was also considering the Asus A8V; would you consider the MSI k8N over taht?

The only Asus board I would put over the K8N Neo2 is the SLI one, if that is what you wanted. I am a big Asus fan, and have had many of their boards, but the MSI is just better.

how is it possible to throw on a 120mm fan on an XP_90? isnt the heatsink too big for it?

got an example or tutorial site?

thanks

I don't think anybody suggested throwing a 120mm on the XP-90. I am suggesting the 92mm medium fow Panaflow fan that Thermalright recommends.
