Viper6929 Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Hey guys, im fairly new to the overclocking hobby, but i know a lot about computers. My question is, does anyone out there run a 2400+ XP cpu clocked at 333fsb? i mean without unlocking the cpu. Have you done it, and with air cooling? If so can you plz tell me what kind of performance increase you got from doing it. do u think its fairly safe, and is your comp still rocksolid stable? Thx BTW my FSB is at 142 and the cpu is running at 2.13 ghz. temps havent changed from the stock settings (35CPU 32 System) Going higher then 142fsb results in games crashing to desktop about once every hour. (dont think my 9700 likes running at above 72 mhz bus.) this is why i wanna do 333/68/
tek-tonic Posted December 11, 2002 Posted December 11, 2002 try bumping up the voltage to the chip and the ram also set the pci/agp devider to a higher setting
Viper6929 Posted December 13, 2002 Posted December 13, 2002 I saw on a forum that they had an xp 2400+ that was "unlocked" when they got it.. Is this true? can anyone please confirm this. I can change clock multipliers on my board using jumpers but i havent tried it cause i thought that the cpu was locked. Thx
tek-tonic Posted December 13, 2002 Posted December 13, 2002 When I bought my 2400+ I came already unlocked. Went into the bios and it let me change it right away
[*N0S*]N]|[TR0 Posted December 16, 2002 Posted December 16, 2002 Whatzup, OK, The biggest and baddest advantage is to up your fsb to max what your ram will run.Really unless you unlock your processor you cant come close to full potential of a system.I bought mine unlocked for 220 bucks, I have a Duran i unlocked by using a fine mech lead pencil and a magnafing glass to cross the bridges. It wasnt hard at all and with out it my system would only run the fsb up to max overclock which is nothing at all.But my Thoroughbred 2400 i paid to have it done the process is differnt but not hard at all.I attached link showing how to do it your self cheap. http://www.3dgameman.com/vr/amd_athlonxp_o...ideo_review.htm Not really much to it, You should be able to OC little more with your combo.Check your CAS latency set it to 2.5 for high FSB settings. Go into your bios setup find CPU Fast Command Decode your options should be "normal / Fast / Ultra" or similar depends on you bios. Set this to normal.Set your DDR voltage to 2.85 which is max you will not melt down or caught on fire trust me.Set your core volts to what your cpu cooler can handle. OK, Very important go into your Advanced chipset Features of the bios and select DRAM clock Set your DRAM CAS Latency to 2.5 If you are running CAS 2 This is your problem.Must set to CAS 2.5. There really isnt much difference between a system with 2.5 and a CAS of 2.I think tests have show like 5% improvements max.And thats running the same FSB and Multiplier. In reality by setting your CAS latency to 2.5 you can push higher FSB's and out Benchmarking the same system set to its max FSB with CAS 2. Now I asume your Multiplyer is 15 (142x15)=2130mhz, Your processor will go to 2.3 gig I know this for fact. You just have to make changes in bios to bring out the extra MHZ.But you will limit even the pc2700 ram to well below its 333mhz rate.Unlock your processor after all your not a real OC er if you havent unlocked at least one processor. With a Multiplyer of 15 the max you can run your FSB at is 152-154 ish.Your ram is rated to 166 youll never see it until you unlock that bad boy. As for the Advantages Your computer will respond to you very very noticablely you click on a exe or link boom it respawns now,High fsbs is what makes all the difference. The extra mhz you get are fine and dandy but really wont inprove your performance like upping your FSB will. For example I have a HLDM gaming Server, It is a 1gig. Duron I run it with a FSB of 380mhz (190x6.5) which gives me 1140mhz.I can change my setup anytime to (100x12) for 1200mhz but it is extreamly lame with the low FSB there is a middle between the two where i have used CAS 2 latency and was only able to push 150+ so Little over 300mhz ddr i used ultra settings and lots of volts.IT just isnt as quick to take commands or reaction to my mouse like it does with the 2.5 CAS and the super high FSB. Now this is only possiable since i have my Processors Unlocked and is the best part about the AMD line up. You really cant tweak your system in to its max unless you have this ability.I highly recomend Unlocking your AMD. Bla,bla, bla so to sum it up make changes in bios and start bumping it up by 2 at a time keep watching your temps you should get to 2250 XP 2700 rates with no trouble, Have fun. Hope this helps you out my brother (AMD)
manman4 Posted December 18, 2002 Posted December 18, 2002 2200+ and higher Athlon XP's are based on Thoroughbred Core (B for 2400+ and Thoroughbred 0.13 A for new 1700+ and higher) 2400+ are factory unlocked with high multipliers, I have a 2400+ that is 133x15, so 16,17 will work if MB and MB Bios allows. KT400 boards esp epox come with ability to unlock 2400+ or higher Athlon XP CPU's (ie all multipliers 3 and higher) same with nforce2 If you dont have these boards search www.aoaforums.com there is a way which i have unlocked a 2400+ in an epox 8k5a2+ it was running 133x15, i got it to work at 166x12.5 and then 200 x 11 you can short the L3 bridge or better there is a wire trick where you short two pins with thin copper wire prior to inserting CPU, this will give multipliers 6-12.5 only ie disables 13x and higher multipliers so its not a full unlock. Hope this helps Manman4
Psywar Posted December 18, 2002 Posted December 18, 2002 In the bios you can change the multiplyer... but that doesnt mean its unlocked.. my friends athlon 1800 I can change the multiplier.. but.. It doesnt really change unless you unlock the chip..
vyroburn Posted December 18, 2002 Posted December 18, 2002 THis is true, all you will be doing is rasing your DDR fsb, and agp, an pci, not your true core Mghz of the processor..... So get your Chip unlocked already and join the crowd
[*N0S*]N]|[TR0 Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 Whatzup, Ok, I think your thinking of the MP 2400+ man,They are unlocked from AMD but i believe all MP processors are unlocked. Not Sure though. I attached a link showing how to unlock Thoroughbreds for those interested. Really is there any OC chip better than the Thoroughbred 2400+ right now. There under 200 bucks and they over clock to current day max rates. You can buy a xp 2800+ but it is twice as much and over clock 50mhz or just get the 2400+ that will OC just a far,Plus the new cores are way cooler then the older cores a OCers perfect chip.Unlocks easier than ever before and overclocks just as high as current AMD flagship. http://www.overclockers.com.au/article.php?id=118669 2.3ish is max speed for a Thoroughbred class processor why not get the cheapest one that runs that.A xp 2600/2700/2800 are a waste of money right now.For a OCer of couse the reg. lamen has no idea and the higher the better and if they dont mod. fsb 333 is better than 266.But FSBin is childs play to a OCer.Hats off to AMD for rewarding the OCer at this point in the processor time line.I dont have a wad of cash in my cpu and i can say i have the fastest Processor on the planet.Along with my fellow OCers of couse. There current flag ship is @2250mhz 50mhz under me ,I know that aint much but the xp 2800+ cant overclock any farther than 2400+ Plus i use a 25 dollar Volcano 7+ cpu air cooler at med speed setting so it is really quiet and it run 42 C idle and 46 c loaded. Stay Cool, Its the only way to OC
