Raife Posted December 7, 2002 Posted December 7, 2002 Ok, A friend gave my Redhat Linux 6.0. As I have no idea about this OS some basic questions (sorry if they are basic and/or dumb) What can it do for me? - Applications - Gaming - Networking Does it run Microsoft software? ANY infomation would be helpful. Thanks
Psywar Posted December 7, 2002 Posted December 7, 2002 Sorry if this sounds mean.. its not ment to be.. If you dont know what it does.. U dont need it lol.. Basicly I would use linux if I was going to run a public FTP or a Webserver.. Webapge.. etc.. because the security on linux is greater then MS.. No you cant run MS products on it.. you can Emulate there products.. but thats about it..
VolcomPimp Posted December 7, 2002 Posted December 7, 2002 heh... I think he went about asking this question really well though... most ppl would probly be flamed for not knowing what linux is... true if you dont know what it is you probly dont need it, but if you have spare old systems around you might want to experiment w/ it... as he said you cant run windows programs w/ out emulating (though running a program called WINE is not considered emulation but I wont go into that...) if you're an experienced computer user and are fed up w/ windows and how easy it is, and you want to try out some open source OS's, then I'd at least look into linux and give a few distro's a try... just dont screw up your windows box if you dont know what you're doing.... Psywar Posted December 7, 2002 Posted December 7, 2002 Yeah.. if u run it on ur windows box.. the 1 thing most people do when they install Linux.. is they intall the boot loader Lilo.. lol.. and then they cant get back in to windows.. I mean u can.if ur on like windows 98 were u just stick a startup disk in.. but if your on win2k u bascily put the cd in.. and do a recover.. which isent a big deal just takes away ur time.. lol.. but as Valcom said.. yeah.. Linux is a cool tool if you have a spare comp and some time to screw around.. and I dident want to sound mean or anything.. Raife Posted December 13, 2002 Posted December 13, 2002 Thanks for the replies - no offense taken. Figured this would be the place to learn about it. Rather get educated, than be ignorant. Thanks again.
