zep_54 Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 Well after forgetting about my Linux partition for about 6 months, i finally remembered it was there, its Fedora, and its beyond my reach. Is there any way to do a password recovery for linux login? Or some command line stuff that will list the login names with their passwords? I aint got my cds anymore with the isos so if i cant recover it then i guess its lost forever:(
markiemrboo Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 Can you boot into 'single user mode' like you can FreeBSD? By default FreeBSD doesn't ask for a username/password if you boot up single user mode, so you can just change the root password. If not.. get some bootable cd like Knoppix, mount whatever partition has ... the shadowed password file on... can't remember what you linux folk call it! and make the root password entry blank or something: root:$1$FXcP/h[snip]NJZSFU.JMceTa.:0:0::0:0:Markie:/root:/usr/local/bin/zsh = root::0:0::0:0:Markie:/root:/usr/local/bin/zsh I think that outta work and you'll be able to login with just an enter, or it won't ask you for a password at all! Or... copy the bootable cd's password file over... or copy it's root entry atleast (should be a blank password?), so you have a root account, then change passwords.. O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Or you could use a bootable disk of Austrumi (or some other password removal/recovery tool) Austrumi can give you access to all (including root and admin) user accounts/passwords. Zarkhalar Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Slackware boot disks will work as well, just mount and run passwd with a chrooted terminal...
