amgcoin18 Posted November 18, 2002 Posted November 18, 2002 Hello, My friend and I are wanting to network together. We have LOS (Line Of Site) from each other. The 2 of us are lacking some equipment. This is why I come here to ask if any of you guys/gals have any knowledge on this setup. We are 1.4 Miles apart from LOS and there is just free air inbetween us. What kind of equipment do we need? I do need to get wireless network cards. Can anyone help me? Thanks My email is: [email protected]
Bosco Posted November 18, 2002 Posted November 18, 2002 You'll need a strong antenna such as this one: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod...4119345bd292271 Then ofcourse your wireless router, access point, or whatever.. tropickid Posted November 22, 2002 Posted November 22, 2002 You don't need to spend a lot of money on this unless you have the to burn. Do some research on the net and build your own antennas. As for the routers, you can make those out of old pentium pcs. There is a Linux program out there that will route the signal. It runs off of a floppy disk. Check out the story about the guy building the case out of plexy glass. He is using the Linux program to share his broadband connection, it's the same idea. I have a guy building a wireless system for me right now. The biggest cost will be the wireless cards. Do some research and build it yourself. amgcoin18 Posted November 22, 2002 Posted November 22, 2002 Thanks, I have once made a router out of one of my older machines. I will do some research on making my own antenna. But my biggest question now is, What brand would be good for this? What kind of wireless card has the ability to put an antenna on it? Thanks for the replies! tropickid Posted November 26, 2002 Posted November 26, 2002 The guy that is building mine uses Orinoco wireless cards. Just make sure that you can add and antenna to them. The other cards, he uses 3com 509 ISA cards.
