Vic Mackey Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 im thinking of replacing my dead soyo board with one that runs dual channel. now i have 3 sticks of corsair xms 3200. if i get a dual channel board will i still be able to run all 3 sticks or will it not allow that? i know that depending on the board it might shut off dual channel but will there be a performance drop from using 3 sticks? bdylyzsouless Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 I think that if you run 3 sticks you have to have the same amout of ram in each channel. If you have 2 dimms per channel you would have to have 2 sticks of 512 in each dimm or 2 sticks of 256 or whatever. You know what I mean? Vic Mackey Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 will the mobo switch to single channel mode if i use 3 sticks?
kanbeki Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 usually the mobo will have a diagram of where you can place dimms for Dual Channel mode, mine requires two be full or all for DC, I dunno about any other mobos but I 'm guessing thats pretty universal
Hailstorm Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 Usually a board only uses two sticks for dual, hence the word dual. Now. I tested my system with 2 gigs of ram, then tested using dual channel and only 1 gig. The scores was very close. I would suggest going dual.
