Nerm Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 No offense to bigred and other Piston fans on this forum, but after watching that Pacers Pistons game tonight I have to say that was the worts display of sportsmanship and conduct I have ever seen by the Piston fans. A small altercation between Wallace and Artest was pretty much all but done with and calmed down by officials and staff. An altercation between players like that is nothing new, it happens all the time. Then the fans decided to riot like a bunch of "punks" as said by a member of the ESPN analyst team. Again, I apologize to bigred and any other Piston fans on this forum I am not saying that you yourselves nor Piston fans in general are un-sportsman like. I am just saying this about the fans at the game involved in that pathetically stupid brawl. I hope that the fans involved are not only band from future NBA games, but also arested. Nerm Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 I am just glad it wasn't worse than it could have been. Somebody could have gotten seriously hurt.
Stachman31 Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 Nerm, I agree with you on the point that what we saw was outright disgusting. There are unfortunately always a few of those morons who don't think before they act. What I saw was a hard foul by Artest. Big Ben took exception to the foul and decided to push Artest back after the play was dead. We see this all the time, two players almost fighting each other, no big deal. Yes, Wallace was angry and was probably going to get a 1 or 2 game suspension once the league reviewed the tape. Again all of this was handled by the referees on the court. And things had settled down. It looked like the players were separated on the court except for Artest who was laying down on the scorer's table, not by his bench. I have no idea why he would do this, but he seems a little strange anyways (month off to promote his new CD incident). Now some yahoo from the stands decides to throw a plastic cup or bottle at Artest. From watching a lot of Hockey games (not this year) I see players in the penalty box often get drinks and cups thrown at them. Yea the player gets angry, but within a few seconds that fan is escorted out by security, and their tickets are usually revoked. This seems to be the same kind of situation. Any action taken by some one in the stands will be taken care of by Staff of the venue. Any malicious actions on the court are taken care of by the Referees. By Artest breaking the cardinal rule, of going into the stands, he did not allow the Staff any time to get the idiot who threw the drink. Once Artest was in the stands pummelling the wrong guy, I think it was O'neal who jumped up there also. That is understandable if he is going to help protect his teamate. But he made not attempt to do that, he made a B-line for a fan and threw a nice punch at this fan. That was wrong. After that, things got even crazier, but I don't have a another hour to get into that. I mean how often do you see Rick Mahorn (original Bad Boy) and Rasheed Wallace actually trying to break up an altercation that they are not involved in. So how could this have been prevented? If Artest would have went to his own bench, instead of laying on the table would that have stopped it? Maybe, maybe not. If Artest would have pointed to the fan after being hit instead of rushing up into the stands, would that have stopped it. Who knows. What I do know is that the game on Christmas day versus Indiana will be the most watched game game of the year. Heck, the game after that between Shaq and his old compadres (Lakers) should be great also. Now that is a Christmas present. Just my thoughts from a non-idiotic, non-beer throwing Piston's fan. General Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 Well i didnt have a chance to hear what happend. I was at a pool hall when i saw the incident on one of the mini tvs. The sound wasnt on so i didnt bother, but in any case it reminded me of the time when Tie Domi pulled a fan into the penlty box and beat the living snot out of him. or the Calgary / Anaheim Game. probably the only bench clearing brawl seen in the past 10 years. anyway the next game was sold out in the hopes of another repeat. Well all that came out of it was a 2-1 loss for calgary. (back when they sucked) So dont get your hopes up for another fight. Sure the pistons or indiana players (I donno where the game will be played) will be booed but i think their gonna be on their best behaivior
Silverfox Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 last week in International Football (soccer), England played Spain over on Spanish soil.... .....the english fielded 2-3 black players and the spanish fans all made "monkey" chants the whole match whenever any of those individuals made contact with the ball. that is utterly appalling. international soccer is played at the *highest* calibre, yet the spanish fans were displaying a level of intelligence equal to a worm while being disgraceful in their racist chanting. thats unsportsmanly-like, dont you agree? bigred Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 that's why soccer fans are called hooligans. they're actually some of the most loyal, and unsportsman like fans I've ever had the displeasure to mean. and the fans that got involved the other day are no better. you also can't generalize all pistons fans in this manner (same goes for soccer / european football too). penalty wise, Artest: GONE for good, forfit all pay for the remainder of his contract, criminal charges Jackson: GONE for good, forfit all pay, criminal charges O'Neil (this is the one I didn't even see happen nor does it make much sense): 20+, large fine, and he could face criminal charges too Ben Wallace: sure he's a piston, but his shove to artest's face after the STUPID foul by artest wasn't called for either. 10+ games, at least $100k fine the fans: GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL, DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200! Cyberfury Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 If any athlete ever enters the stands without a GOOD reason (i.e. not just getting hit by a cup), then they better be prepared to take a whoopin. It happened once at one of my baseball games, and the results were NOT pretty.... I'm glad the Detroit fans reacted like they did (except for throwing the cup in the first place, which was just one idiot). Too bad Artest and the rest didn't take more of a beating. Silverfox - I believe that this is what you are referring to: http://www.tsn.ca/soccer/news_story.asp?id=105774 I think you overstated the seriousness of the situation a little...it was only one guy being racist.
