Propane Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 Well, the questions are 1) Is this a good card... how will it preform in games like Doom3 and Half-Life2? 2) Is it flashable to a higer "version" Thanks, Im talking about the powercolor one too... BeanerSchnitzel Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 You should be good for Doom 3 and Half Life 2 with the 9800 Pro IMO. Need to know your specs to be sure though. but to give you an idea doom 3 and counter strike source run very well with almost all settings maxed (it looks good trust me) with my rig. AMD 64 2800 o/ced, 9800 pro o/ced, 1 gig of ram
InvaderTrax Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 It's good enough for Doom 3 on 1024x768 with medium quality on my computer. Some are flashable to XT if they have the R360 core. Only way to know that is to take off the heat sink and read the die yourself. The MSI ones with a giant heat sink have an almost perfect record of being R360's

BloodySunday Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 (edited) get a Msi one or get a Ati 256 Mb 9800 pro those usally can be turned into 9800 xt Id have to advise against the MSI Green one. I have mine and its been all problems since I got it. All my games barely play. It seems to just be the green one though people on New Egg have said they returned their green one and got a Red one (the reference design one) and it works fine now. But if I were you I would go with the 6800 for about $100 I think its much more worth it. Well, I got an RMA for my card. When I got the new card, I was actually HOPING that I would get the red one so I would not have the same problems that I had with my old one. I got the red one. I put it in my computer, install DNA 3.0.4.9 and it shows up as a 9800 PRO. I took the card out, removed the heatsink, and it was an R360. Slapped some ceramique on and I am running at XT with stock cooling. I'm going to replace it with the Zalman heatpipe cooler and fan so I can overclock it farther. Had a lot better experience thanI did with the last one. Highly recommended, even if you get the red one. This is a very fast card. Easy to install, although i used the omega drivers. my first order was the one with the green PCB as the picture, but after i returned it because it was doa i got the red pcb one. it uses a PRO core and has a crappier heatsink on the core, as well as no ram cooling. i returned it wishing to get the one with the XT core, but i got the red one again, after i specifically told newegg not to send me the SP version. overall the cards are the same speed, but overclocking performance is probably different. hardnrg Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 while the 9800pro should serve you well, you may find your 1700+ to be a little underpowered... even oc'd that much

But most people get one of the softmodds working If I could do it over again I so would have got a 6800 instead. Im probaly going to RMA my 9800 Pro first and then just sell it and use my 5200 till I build a whole new system before the year is out. InvaderTrax Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 The 6800 is a good bit better (9800 Pro - 6000 3DMark03, 6800 regular - 8500 3DMark03)
