jimmyshilacky Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 (edited) So I consider myself moderately knowledgeable when it comes to computers, but I am completely stumped with this one. I woke up yesterday and my computer will not boot. When I hit power the fans come on but that Edited October 26, 2004 by jimmyshilacky
bigred Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 check out the picture in brisck1's post. then take a look at your motherboard. I unfortunately see this 2-3 times a DAY with people's computers. and usually the syptoms are the same as what you are saying. jimmyshilacky Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 (edited) So i just opened it up and eveything appears to be fine. No orange goo, just a little bit of dust. Although one of the capacatators has a tiny bit of odd looking brown dust on the inside of the cap that i cannot tell if its the goo seeping out the sides or its just dust and i am trying too hard to find the goo. I dont have any way to put up pics now, but i will tomorrow morning when i get to the office... I pulled off the heak sink though and it looks like a lot of the thermal paste had dried that was on the cpu... The cpu looks fine besides that, although there is a weird very small orange hash mark on the bottom corner of the actual chip on the cpu... Brought it to Comp usa today and they did a voltage check and said that the power supply is running fine so their best guess was that it was the motherboard or the cpu... everything else on the motherboard looks fine at first glace. Is it possible that i burnt out the cpu? If soo can anyone suggest a good, reliable, and overclockable AMD 64+ cpu/motherboard combo that would retail around $250-400? I am looking on new egg right now and a lot of the 64's look pretty similar but have price differneces. What is the differences between a clawhammer and a Newcastle core? Is one considered better? What about between using a socket 754 and 929 board, any advantages of either of those? Man this stuff get soo confusing some times Edited October 26, 2004 by jimmyshilacky
bigred Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 you took a computer to InCOMPitentUSA? god help you... please never do that again. anyhow it's possible for capacitors to blow from the bottom too. I'd more than likely blame the motherboard on this one. time to get that K8N neo or neo 2 and an athlon 64 btw, did the "techs" at compusa offer you fries with thier service? and I hope you didn't pay those clowns the $100 flat rate fee for them to "look" at it.... cuz that just means that they took it to the shop, and set it on the bench and looked at it (not actually touched) according to company policy... and I wonder why I was always in trouble for working on computers in the tech shop. jimmyshilacky Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 (edited) No hahaha i brought it in too see what the costs were, and when they said $100 i said nevermind. I did convince the guy just to look at it for me though, and thats when he did the voltage test and take a look at the board. I guess its time to get the new board and chip. You all suggest Newegg.com or is there a more reliable website to order stuff through? Gremlin Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 Newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com Both of them are good. Why are you getting a new CPU if you think it is good???
