Newport Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 Ok, i have finally saved up enough *bling bling* to purchase myself a router. I would buy an access point and buy a second IP but i dont wanna spend 20 cents extra a month. So far, i just have a desktop and a notebook hooked up and ready to go with wireless internet. Networking is NOT my forte so hang with the attack of newb questions.... 1) My notebook has a wireless card in it but my desktop does not. Do i need to get a wiresless card for my desktop? 2) Netgear and Lynksis are the better brands... What are some good models that will let me have meximum distance as well as a decent transfer speed? 3) Will the driver CD that comes with the router (they do have something like that dont they?) create the link(s) between my computers and the router? Do i need to do anything manually instead? 4) I live in an old house and i would like to have internet on the second floor. presuming that my router is not near any TVs, radios, microwaves etc etc will i get a good reception upstairs? 5) Along with #4, how much inteference does the above mentioned create for wireless internet? 6) Am i just too dang stupid to buy and hook up a router in the first place? Thanks for your blazing fast replies! Your beloved, Newport
O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 (1)Yes (Orinoco make good wireless nics) (2)Linksys (3)It should be automatic if running WinXP; you can access your router config manually (4)You can get interference if the distance is too great. (5)Depends on distance and other factors. (6)No, it takes patience and a little research.
Ahnya Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 well we had a wireless router that also took 10/100base T ethernet wire. i was wired on my onboard lan with other five computers, and the two notebooks used wireless cards. it was a linksys router. Dasterdly Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 Omega got it all, but here's some extra info Most wireless routers have 4 wired ports on them. So you can plug your desktop directly into the router, and not need to get a wireless card for it, saving yourself $70.
Newport Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 Thanks for the help all! just a little FYI, i am posting this comment 100 feet away from the router... I went to Micro Center shortly after gathering results and feedback and bought a Linksys router/Netcard combo for 107.xx including tax... I had some *bling bling* left over so i bought the new Papa Roach and Earshot CDs lol... My router is in the middle of the 1st floor in my house... I walked down 5 houses away and i got poor reception. However. i was still surfing the internet like i was on 56k hehe. w00T! IoDd64 Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 Dont setup both computers on wireless. You have to have atleast one through lan wire, so you can upgrade your firmware and crap. 56k sucks and you can ask anyone here... other than taz I have a linksys WRT54G, I bought it last week, becuz my dlink DI-624 wouldnt stop dcing me (worst customer service, worst router, speed doesnt mean . if u cant transfer the files)

road-runner Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 Theres a firmware I found on here somewhere for the Linksys WRT54G I updated mine here and at the office, it gives you a lot more options, you can change it to and access point, increase to transmit power etc. here the name of it Firmware_Satori-4_0G.bin you can find it on google or somewhere in this networking forum there was a link to it, its to large to load on here a little over 2mb, it gives more options than I know how to work, it is supposed to have the options of the high dollar Access points. Ahnya Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 i know 56k sucks. i couldn't afford broadband. thing is, i got better connection speed on a 7 comp network on dialup than i'm geting with 3 on cable. i hate my provider. pages taking an hour to load sometimes..... ugh. *throws her modem out the window*
