Byron Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 Well, I've got my folding rig connected through a wireless usb adapter like my computer is, but My step-dad just got a laptop, so he is going to be needing this wireless adapter more then me. Is it possible to use a certain type of ethernet cable to directly connect my computer to the folding rig? Both have gigabit lan, so If it would be possible to just connect the two through it, I could have a very speedy file server/folding rig. I know that I can route its connection through my computer, but I am just wondering on what type of physical connection/ cabling I need. Ahnya Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 gigabit ethernet, in order to run at that speed, needs a router that will do gigabit ethernet and you need cat5e cable. expensive stuff. regular cat5 cable and 10/100 router will just give you 10mbit or 100 mbit depending on what you set the card at. MindDrive Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 the cheapest way is to just get a cross over cable - not a standard ethernet cable but one that is wired backwards on one end -- then you could connect the computers directly to eachother - cost less than 20 bucks,,, now if you want to setup a network then ur talking bout 70-130 bucks

Byron Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 I believe its gigabit ethernet. So If I bought a crossover cable, I could run directly connect these two computers to eachother, and share files etc?
GTSticky Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 Well, another wireless USB adapter will only run you 29 bucks at compusa. But to answer your question.. you can easily just use a crossover cable to connect the machines. It shouldn't run you more than 7-10 bucks if you shop around (though some stores really rip you off for crossover cables..) Also, there is nothing more effective about using a hub or switch over a crossover cable. A hub or switch simply allows more than 1 connection. For a single connection a crossover is just fine. Byron Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 Thanks, I'm going to go get a crossover cable at target 2day, I saw them clearanced, so they are nice and cheap. If that doesnt work, I'll just get another wirelss usb adapter. Thanks for the replies.
Ahnya Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 or if all else fails, make yer own crossover. take an ethernet cable, cut off the one end, reverse the wire order, and crimp on a new end. simple, really.
Byron Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 I might have a friend do that for me tommorow. I aws able to get cat5 crossover cable today, but I couldnt find any cat6 crossover. I really would like the bandwith boost with cat6, So i might get a regular cat6 cable and get him to make it a crossover cable.
