Laptop Proc Question

Recommended Posts

So I have a laptop with a AMD Athlon 2400+ and I am wanting to put a 3000+ in it. The only question is weither the voltage difference ( 1.45 for the 2400+ and 1.6 for the 3000+) is going to be a problem. I also have to check to see if the CPU is soldered to the MOBO. I was just wondering what you guys think. I dont think it will be a problem but because its a laptop however I just wanted to see what you guys had to think.

Thanks

Happy OC'ing and as always.... :foldon::foldon:

Yeah the battery life will go down and as long as both chips are the same FSB then the board sould support it. Kinda like in my laptop i know it will support all 400 celeron/533 P4s. The reason im sure of this is bc Toshiba offers the other chips in their A45 laptops and offers a link to a PDF about the motherboard in it. idk, you might want to look into what other CPUs were offered in that model to make you feel better about it being compatable. Also it may run hotter bc you wont be able to increase performance with a new CPU cooler. Be sure to put on AS5 or another really good quatilty so you get the best possible cooling for the stock laptop cooling. Mine runs up to 65C max load folding with a 2.6 celeron, so you can imagine puttting in a faster CPU like a 2.8 P4.

IDK if any of that is something you hadn't though about, but if oyu havent you should.

um... have we all forgotten something REAL important? or shall I say 2 things?

first off the 2400+ runs @ 133mhz front side bus. the 3000+ could be 166 or 200mhz (x2 to get amd's supposed "fsb").

second the 2400+ is a t-bred. the 3000+ is a barton.

with these two facts we have to find out does the motherboard support both things? if not it's over. don't even bother trying to cram a 3000+ in there.

As Paranoid stated...all moblie Bartons have the same FSB...however I am still debating weither the upgrade will be worth the time and risk. I believe I will stick with upgrading it to 1GB of memory first and see how that works. If the performance still isn't there, I'll consider upgrading the CPU. Thanks for all of your help guys.
