Gmoney Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 (edited) Hey folks, I'm kind of new to this video card business.....so much so that I got a decent Dell computer, but with no AGP, only PCI. So, can any of you guys tell me which not-insanely priced PCI card will run Doom 3, Far Cry, etc. in all their glory? Thanks in advance. InvaderTrax Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Either an FX5200 or MX4000
Gmoney Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 (edited) Just my luck. Isn't there a good 128 or 256MB PCI card out there under $200? Edited October 23, 2004 by Gmoney
InvaderTrax Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 The FX5200 and MX4000 are both 128MB, but having lots of RAM doesn't make it a good card. If you've got the money, I suggest buying a case, motherboard, and video card and harvesting all the other parts from your Dell. Otherwise, the FX5200 or MX4000 are about the best you'll get
nVidia_Freak Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Or the Radeon 9250. But these two are really the only "good" pci cards you'll get your hands on.
Gmoney Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Sounds like I am up the creek. I appreciate the help though.
nVidia_Freak Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Uhm, btw, how old is your Dell? Or how new? If it's one of the new 8600 or the new XPS, it has x16 PCI Express slots.

It's a good old cheap Dimension 2400, just got it about 3 or 4 months ago. Whats the difference between PCI and PCI Express. Yes I am ignorant. Nstyle Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 PCI is just a basic card slot and PCI E was designed to transfer graphics even faster than AGP... Im sure you only got AGP because my dell I bought back in january had PCI slots only as well...Well i was gonna waste my money on a PCI gfx card but im glad I didn't...i got lucky and got this comp.. Id save your money for a better comp all together...see if you cant do somethin with the Dell like sell it to someone cheap.
