GmAz Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 O.K. I just got my new mobo and processor. No need really to go inot depth about what they are, but if I put the new hardware in and keep the same install of Windows XP Pro, will I be ok on the mobo's drivers? I mean, I currently have the NForce 2 chipset with the current drivers and my new mobo has the NForce 3 chipset. Shouldn't it just recognize everything and install them correctly without having to reinstall windows? Reason I ask is cause I just recently formatted and redid my system (just for maintenance) and don't wanna do it all again. I am installing the stuff, so please let me know. Raptor Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 well theres 3 possiblities... 1. you dont reinstall windows and you get lucky and theres no driver issues and it recognizes hardware and you load drivers that come with the disk and your set... 2. you put them in you start your os and u get errors.... 3. You reinstall and garenteed no probs with drivers... i would go possibilites 1 and hopefully youll get lucky and it will work then if that doesnt then go to possobility 3 and there ya go it sux to reaload but assumings its the nfroce3 chipset you ahve a 64bit proc and it doesnt take long to load windows with that.... up to you what you do tho
GmAz Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Well, i am definitely going with 1. I figured all three possibilities. I hope it works ifne. If not, i will pop in my Knoppix linux CD and burn all files to cd or dvd from my HD. Mainly game saves. All my other stuff is on my external firewire HD so if this exact situation occurs, all my files are safe. Thx. Just wanted to hear another person tell me what I was thinking. Late!!! Its all installed, time to plug in and power it up!!!
cybergrunt69 Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 I'm about 50/50 with this. It doesn't seem to matter much what the chipset is, sometimes it "just works" amazing the hell out of me... Even if it does blow up (which has happened to me a few times) I've always been able to run the "repair" option from the XP install CD. As long as you have a good backup, just go for it.... Worst that could happen is that you have to re-format and re-install. Again. ALSO - if it does work nicely, there's a very good chance that because of the number of hardware changes that you'll have to re-register windows. That may or may not be a prob... GmAz Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 no, i wn't have to reinstall windows...cough cough corporate cough cough...anywho, it al lwent well except for two things. The ethernet drivers wont' work. I am so pissed bout that (i am on my wifes comp now). And two, it killed my thumb drive. I have a 1gb sandisk. And i had a lot of stuff on it I really REALLY didn't want deleted. Well..its gone now. so pissed at that more than the net. Anywho, I now have to reinstall cause I can't get the hardware conflict gone from my ethernet adapter. Arrgggghhhhhhhh!!!!

MindDrive Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 you are going to hafta reinstall windows - it might boot up with the install already on the drive from your other mobo and processor but you are going to eventually run into dozens of problems and windows xp will yell at you that "since the original install of xp, this system has gone through major changes and needs to be reactivated" you should NEVER just swap out a motherboard and processor and HOPE that the already installed windows will work!!! your just asking for headaches and frustration
