Shaggy Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 (edited) I have a D-Link Wireless G Router (DI-624 to be exact). I am currently using a D-Link Wireless B PCI Card. My question is, does wireless b and g really make a big difference if the your isp can't even run faster then b. basically what im saying is, b runs at 11mps, but my isp (comcast) doesnt run that fast (or at least i dont think it does) so it wouldn't really matter if i upgraded from b to g right? I just want to make sure im understanding this right. Edited October 7, 2004 by Shaggy
Raptor Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 i dont think it should matter but im not an expert on it i have the same router just i have a wireless g pci card if your isp doesnt run faster than it would make sence for it to not make a dif...although i would upgrade just incase your isp upgrades or something you never know...mine did like a week ago out of nowhere
andrusk Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 the only real advantage you would likely see from g instead of b would be faster computer to computer file transfer speeds. Other than that, b should work fine if you just plan on using it for intenet connections.
kewlboxer2 Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 b runs @ 11mbps like u said, and g runs at 54mbps... the speed is only effective within the ethernet, not ur connection speed
Shaggy Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 Ok, so i figured it correctly then. So in other words don't worry about upgrading then unless for some reason im running a something faster then T1 or im making major transfers from computer to computer?? btw, i appreciate the fast replys
Nemo Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 The big advantage I see is that the 802.11g protocol has stronger encryption (WPA vs. WEP in 802.11b) and has better range. Other than that, the ISP is still the bottleneck.
andrusk Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 I can use wpa on my 802.11b products as well as my g products. So I would not say that WPA is even an issue. I have an hp 2510 psc with wireless b and it has WPA.
Nemo Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 I was not aware there were any WPA-enabled 802.11b devices as it hasn't even been fully ratified in the 802.11g protocol yet. I know my 802.11b laptop has to use WEP to connect to my 802.11g network, it can't do WPA and the laptop is only a couple of months old. So, I think we can say it might be an issue to consider.
