pwayzjellyroll Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 well my uncle called me and said his comp starts up and says its missing a folder or something.. i suppose it's windows based for it not to boot, but now if i use xp (he has it on his comp) and i use the repair windows feature, will it save his files? he's in the middle of a BIG project and really can't afford to lose his files.. so if i repair instead of overwrite will progs and files still be there? ir_cow Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 yes, but dont take my word i tryd it and it competly F up my xp so right after i installed it again, but the only thing still left was what was in "my documents" folder which ws hidden for quite some time intill i felt like going to the windows folder to find it.. so yes your "my documents" will still be there but lost someweres in the windows folder probly under the old user name, now if he didnt save his stuff there , theirs no hope but to send the harddrive to a pro that will back it up for you. its costs around $

cybergrunt69 Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Yes, all of your apps and files should be in the same place and unaffected. Â In my experience, the Windows repair option from the CD is quite low-risk for messing up your data. The only time I've seen it not work is when the hdd was physically bad; other than that, it's worked fine for me. Â If it's that critical that you don't touch any files on the drive, it may be worth it to your uncle to buy a new hdd to use for his computer. Install windows to the new hdd, and then reinstall your apps and copy your data back over. (read: insurance policy - rarely necessary, but great when needed)
CmpFreak88 Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 I've always just gone to reinstall and when it says there's already an operating system I say to just overwrite the system without reformatting and that saves my files, but don't take my word for it, there's always the risk something could happen so you're best bet would be just to use or buy a cheap hard drive to install an OS on and then back up your files and reformat or reinstall. 360RamGuy01 Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 could you just take out his hard drive and slave over his important files onto your hard drive? or would that not work?
