Guest FxXP Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 (edited) You are asking for something that won't exist. DOOM 3 as smooth as possible on a cheap card? Not going to happen. I have a heck of a time maintaining a smooth framerate on a 9700 Pro AIW. However, for decent DOOM 3 gameplay, I can only recommend the 9500 Pro or higher from ATi or the FX5800 or higher from nVidia. Edit: You can get a refurb Sapphire 9600 Pro 128MB for $99 on Newegg. FaNta84 Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 you can also get a refurb 9800 pro for about $150, just make sure it is 256 bit

ShadowPaktu Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 save and get the best bang for yer buck, the 6800 GT the fact thats it's fast as hell, added to that you got a very good year of gmaing in the future, you wont need to upgrade for some time. There was a topic on upgrading sometime in the past, do you buy a cheap componennt and have to upgrade it 6months down the line because it isn't up to the job, or do you but a more expensive component and not need to upgrade for 2 years? you need to weigh those options too. What i do now is i upgrade components yealy, i do this because if something's a year old, ill still get a good second hand selling price for it to put towards my new components. Ive done this with 4 vid cards so far, and half gtten well over half the price i paid for it in the first place.
lucky13* Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 what about the 6600GT? should be out soon for agp. Reviews I've seen have it just below a vanilla 6800, but it's only about $200.
flipkel Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 If you can wait for a while (not sure exactly how long) The geforce 6600gt will be coming out in an AGP version. from the reviews I have read it sounds like this is going to be one AWESOME card for only $200. tbone2sk Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 I here that the 6600 gt is going to be the best mid lvl card out there. They also say that it overclocks like crazy.
OweO2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 the 6600gt will be your best bet. far better than the x700 series from ati. Look over to tomshardware for a comparison. The 6600gt will overclock to the clock speeds of a 6800gt (maybe not as high) but won't perform as good. personally i would save up and get the 6800gt. i have mine running at 435/1170 it will do 450/1180 on air cooling and higher on wc but i don't want that right now. Im getting 13441 in 3dmark03 with more headroom on my processor to break 14k. I would definately recommend a 6800gt over anything else (Especially the x800 series)
