Siebenburgen Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 I gave my old dell (eww i know ) to my brother and it had 640 ram 64x2 256x2 He took it in to the shop to get an upgrade to 1gb and the people at the store say its gonna cost $300 Canadian to get it. that seems like total BS to me, they claim its out of date computer and they have to find the right type of ram for it. 256x2 = $300? is this total bs? i can get a gig of samsung ram for $100 or is it true that it requires special ram? please let me know asap, thanks. computer is dell dimension 8100
snipermav Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 No, you don't need special RAM for a prebuilt. Just buy some and put it in yourself, much much cheaper.
Whitelightning Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 Yeah, no special ram is required....they are just trying to make some cash off you....That system should use regular ram....
sandman1485 Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 Does that computer take RDRAM or SDRAM?

Siebenburgen Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 its P4 1.4 GHz and i dont remember what type of ram it was... and i can't check either... but if it is special ram or not its still way too much for an upgrade like that and im sure they'd find the crummiest type of that ram to put in it too. Byron Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 <rant> man, one of my moms ram sticks crapped out recently. She is also runnign a dell, its a 550mhz p3. So now its down to 128mb. But the thing is, Iwent to circuit city, and they were wanting frikken $70 for pc-100 128mb, and $120 for 256mb pc-100 ram.... I was about to crap myself, So I ended up cussing calling the store many obsenities right in front of one of their "sales representitives" in the comp area. I also asked the same guy prior why in the hell they had the 6800GT by evga online for $400 and $500 in the store.. I called the place a jew at that encounter lol. But I might be sellin my mom my stuff for extremely cheap so that I can get an a64 mb/cpu. </rant>
daniel Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 My aunt had the same prob... and dell told her that her PC was out of date and it was "impossible" to get the ram... but she got it... from amazon... 256 at a really high price... let me check the amazon email... Smart Modular DELL 256MB DIMENSION 8200 ( SMDL-8200/256E ) [Electronics] [Electronics] for130 bucks each one... here is a link to the amazon ram page http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...g=UTF8&v=glance
Siebenburgen Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 that's ridiculous... you have to pay more for crap ram than you do for quality ram... i think i'd rather just get a new hard drive for it.. unless thats out of date too
Guest FxXP Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 (edited) The 8100 is P4 /w RDRAM 800. I had one in the shop a few days ago. (1400 posts!) Edited September 28, 2004 by FxXP
MindDrive Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 yup dell did that because they thought RDram was the next hottest thing - lil did they know that it was a dead tech due to its costs and its lack of compatability - ive serviced LOTS of dells that had this "crap" special ram - so if they are only gonna charge you 300 canadian for 512MB's (dual 256) then thats not a bad deal really...... or what you could do is sell the ram that you do have - get another motherboard that supports PC2100/2700/3200 , get cheaper more compatable ram and go from there - ditch that non compatable dell
