cyberpc04 Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Ok, i'm getting a laptop for college really soon and I really want to make sure my money is well spent. I'd only like to spend about $2600 +/- a bit. I was thinking about getting the Acer Ferrari 3200 which has the AMD64 2800+ and then putting 1gb pc3200 and a 60gb 7200rpm hdd in it which will help speed it up. I don't know as if you can upgrade the cpu in that particular laptop either. It has the 9700mobile, which is the lowest i'll go for graphics in a laptop. Does anyone know if I would be able to upgrade the cpu in this laptop? Anyone have any ideas for laptops that aren't heavy as a brick, last more than 1hr. on battery, and have at min. the 9700mobile for graphics? cyberpc04 Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 I have heard alienware ones have problems here and there. The acer ferrari is only 2k and 2.4k after upgrades. Plus alienware hasn't come out with their amd64 which is the only type cpu i'll get in a laptop. From what I have read they kick butt compared to the p4s. Lyrical Exercise Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 I had won the ferrari 3200 at the AMD Tech Conference and its amazing, so far it has great performance
cyberpc04 Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 How is the screen on it? I had read in a few reviews that the screen has horrible lighting to it. That its not evenly lit and even just overall the screen is poor quality. I already bought an alienware with a 3.4ghz p4, 1gb ddr400, 60gb 7200rpm hdd, ati 9700m, 8x dvd burner, etc. If the screen on that laptop isnt that bad though then I could still cancel my order and get that one. I really liked it especially since it has the amd64 although its only a 2800. Do you know if you can upgrade the cpu? And do you know how it stacks up against a p4 @ 3.4ghz? imm0rt41 Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 All I can say about the p4 3.4GHz alienware is you may not want to use it for hours at a time. Those 3-2GHz+ chips get insanely hot in laptops. I think ASUS makes a third-party cooler for laptops that does a decent job. cyberpc04 Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Hot for the user or for the hardware to the point that it might lockup or break something? I don't really care if its hot for the user. I just want a fast laptop with lots of memory and a fast hdd.
r_g Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 the dells have the ati radeon 9800 mobile, the only company take a look at those
cyberpc04 Posted October 17, 2004 Posted October 17, 2004 Basically dell took a desktop and smashed it into a double sized laptop that weighs 20lbs. I don't really want to have a laptop that is heavier than all my books for school combined. I want to have a tad bit of mobility to it if possible. I'm thinking that alienware was a good choise unless the acer can have the cpu upgraded, then i'll have to get that one. DECwakeboarder Posted October 17, 2004 Posted October 17, 2004 For windows I would look into an Alienware, there is a really sexy vaio tablet, 12 inch screen tho.... Depending on what your doing, a MAC would actually make a very nice, reliable, and down right sexy laptop
snipermav Posted October 17, 2004 Posted October 17, 2004 The powerbooks are very nice, but like he said it depends on what you want to do with it.
