mazakman Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 My kids use the wife's computer and the other day the desktop was a link to a spyware removal program.????? Naturally I was unamused and found it to be a daunting task to remove the desktop screenshot, but I can't seem to load any screenshots or other themes, it just stays blank. (darned kids will be the death of me! ) Would any of you have had the same experience and could explain how you delt with the problem? Thanks guys. Kamikaze_Badger Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Hint: Yuo is screwed. Tell your kids to stay away from warez sites, dude. http://www.antionline.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=261903
O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Is this after running virus, ad/spyware scans?
Kamikaze_Badger Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 (edited) Boot into safe mode, run HijackThis, and post your log here. Otherwise, I will come over to your house, install a firewall on your kids' computer to block out sites that give you that piece of madware(malware and adware combined, and it can be a beeyotch to remove). I'm not even sure of how to remove it. All I know is, it's hard. EDIT: Also, open up TaskManager and check your processes list for any processes in the list at the bottom of my post. tazwegion Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 When all else fails... a clean install OS works for me, though now I've got better AV/firewall + utilities, so not for quite some time have I had to resort to such a drastic measure Good luck... P.s. Spybot 'search & destroy' allows for immunisation against known scum-ware sites
mazakman Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Hi Taz, how's it going. I know that doing a low level format and re-installing would be the best thing to do, but hence the nature of my question. I'd rather not do that. SHOOT! I'll probably have to do that crap. the kids don't give a crap as to firewalls or adware removal programs) The oldest that uses the computer (my wife's computer actually) is 13 years old, never mind the 8 year old that tries to play DOD on that rig! The crap hit the fan, and the fan is on high! (you know what I mean) Thanks guys.
Kamikaze_Badger Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 (edited) DON'T FORMAT YET! Listen, post a HijackThis log. Here's a direct link to it: http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/hjt.zip And some more: http://downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip http://ftp.officefive.org.uk/sites/www.spy.../hijackthis.zip http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip http://computercops.biz/zx/Merijn/hijackthis.zip And here's a link to the Download.com download: http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-80...tml?tag=lst-0-1 Run it, post the log, and then do 10 scans with Ad-Aware 6.0 SE, Spybot - Search & Destroy, and Spysweeper. And, try doing it in safemode. Then, find something for scanning in Linux, download it, boot from a Knoppix boot disk, and then run that program. I'm not going to allow anyone to give up against spyware/adware/scumware/malware without a fight. Hell, if you give me a ride, I'll come over there and get rid of it myself.
