BiPolar Posted September 22, 2004 Posted September 22, 2004 I just ordered two hitachi 80gb SATA, and i've got a 80gb maxtor that I can hook up to SATA with a converter. Should/can I set up all three in a raid 0, or should I just set the two hitachi's up and attach the maxtor as an ide?
Eva_Unit_0 Posted September 22, 2004 Posted September 22, 2004 You can't do a raid 0 with three drives...you can only use two, and they must be identical. Use the two hitachi's as a raid array, and leave the maxtor separate.
zigen Posted September 22, 2004 Posted September 22, 2004 raid is only with 2 identical drives you cannot do the maxtor one on raid. only the 2 hitachi drives so put the maxtor one on ide
exeter_acres Posted September 22, 2004 Posted September 22, 2004 Actually you can set RAID 0 up with many drives.... it is BEST for them to e identical.... but they don't have to be... the drive size will use the smallest availabel and then add them together... so yes.. the 3 80GB drives can be used in RAID 0... but the performance isn't usually noticible better than 3 drives...... maybe do the 2 new ones as RAID 0 and then the third drive as an IDE backup drive..... LobbDogg Posted September 22, 2004 Posted September 22, 2004 Yes it also depends on if the RAID controller will support more than two drives. But it is possible.
BiPolar Posted September 22, 2004 Posted September 22, 2004 thanks...i'll just set the two new ones as raid 0 and the other in IDE. Either for backup or maybe as music storage.
