Memory Lane

Recommended Posts

My first cards weren't even 3D accelerators...I don't remember what the heck they were.

As for the actual accelerators in my main gaming PC:

Some off-brand 3dFX / Glide card - don't remember the name.

nVidia TNT2 m64 - good card for what it was

Voodoo 5 5500 - I miss that card. Sooooo much money at the time though.

Geforce 2 MX400 - complete POS

Geforce 4 ti4200 - lapped, overclocked to well past ti4600 levels

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro - flashed to 9800XT

ATI Radeon X850XT PE

ATI Radeon 2900XT 1 GB GDDR4 - cost a TON when I got it but was worth it for 1 month of supremacy

ATI Radeon 4870X2 - still in use, bought on launch day for $470 :D

Various others over the years have been in my HTPC, portable LAN machine, etc, but I don't consider them my main cards. My history has been decidedly in favor of the red team as of late though (and I nearly bought a 5970 earlier today).

Riva TNT2-don't really remember much about this card

Voodoo 5 5500-loved this card and still remember it well. I believe this was my first card to move from PCI slot to VGA

GeForce Ti 4200

GeForce Ti 4600

ATI 9800 Pro-this lasted a long time, probably my most used card.

2 GeCube 3870s

Asus 4870 512MB

2 Sapphire Vapor X 4890s

2 Sapphire 5870s

Hoping to find a pair of 5970s next

First had a 7300LE that came with the first PC I bought. It wasn't hard to see the need to upgrade that so I then got a HD 4850 which went well on the 19" I was using.

Then I got a 24" so I upgraded to what I have now the GTX 295 which I got a couple months after launch date on ebay for about 30% cheaper than retail :P

Some IGP from the Pentium II era - I actually remember playing some games on this thing... including StarCraft

ATI Radeon 8500LE 64MB - That was hell of an upgrade. It made Diablo II totally awesome!

NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT - It ran WoW fine, so did the job decently enough for me back then

NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT - My first good card! Damn that card was amazing

ATI Radeon HD4850 - Bought after I sold the ^ to a friend

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 - That's when I started spending more time reviewing rather than gaming :P

...

Fermi? :D

you make it sound like the 260 isn't a strong card and it turned you off to gaming completely

Its funny you mention the Voodoo series of cards and most people give you one of these  I was sad when 3DFX went away. :(

In their day they were awesome. I was able to play the first Laura Croft "tomb raider" because of those cards. :thumbs-up:

I'll try to keep this short.

(first build) 128mb 9700 pro Ati.

(second build)256mb 9600 pro GeCube(I think they went under).

Few, that was tough. Haha. You may be wondering why i am no longer in the pc realm? Well i still build computers, just not for myself. With consoles so much like pc's i just don't think it is worth the money anymore. I can spend $400-$600 on a console at launch and have it last 5-6 years until the next gen. Sure the graphics might not be as good but its not nearly as big of a gap as it was a couple generations ago. That's just my 2 cents.
