dan2315 Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Hello All. I am looking to get a new computer and would like to go the "barebones" route. I did some research and I came up with this. I am coming off of a Dell Dimension 8100, P4 1.3Ghz 128 MB RAM, 40GB HD, and I think a NVidia GeForce 2. For my new computer I just want something to check e-mail, fool around with pictures and play the occasional game (on my old computer I would only have one game on it at a time). I was just wondering if all these parts are compatible and if its worthwile. confuzzedintelguy Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 ya that looks good you might want to go with a mobile cpu tho they overclock better just my opion
dan2315 Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 What the hell is overclocking anyway?
suchuwato Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 it's where you make the cpu (in the case of overclocking a cpu) go faster than it's rated speed. this is called the 'clock' therefore overclocking.
confuzzedintelguy Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 What the hell is overclocking anyway? alot of fun and also its when you take a cpu and make it go faster thin its rated speed by raiseing the FSB<<front side buss or the multiplier to increase performance
dan2315 Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Oh OK. I just want something simple, efficient, and effective.
jammin Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Just a quick point.. you may want to take that fortron psu off your list as the power supply which comes with that antec case is actually ok. If you are going to buy another power supply then I would go for one which is rated a bit higher.. something over 400w. Also, you could buy a cheaper graphics card.. but I would personally stick with the 9800pro. Anything much cheaper is going to give you far less performance. r_target Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Video card? Sounds like a job for the 9600xt. The 9800Pro is superior though.
worker Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 (edited) What the hell is overclocking anyway? It when you rase the front side bus of fsb on the cpu. If you got cooling it work great but air and coolers that have no fan coil coolers don t really don t work that too well. Won t be able to overclock the cpu much with those coolers unless your room is around 50F, 40F degress all the time. water and phase change you can do it all the time. I don t overclock lower the life of your cpu and can maybreak your computer. Edited September 17, 2004 by worker
slappy Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 ok well in my opinion i would go with a 80 gig hdd so you have the room to do the ocasional games and i would go with at the bare minimum 256mb of ram but you really need 512 video card could be better but it would work on some of the not so hi grafic games like ut2k4 or sw kotor.
